This topic is open to discuss the World Wide Day of Genital Autonomy (WWDOGA) , an event that should be increasingly unifying the international community for all 4 types of sexual mutilation (intersex, female, male, transgender). The aim is to make this annual event more visible to the members of the international coalition, so that everyone becomes accustomed to making it part of their strategy and contributing to its development.

Official statement from The Bodyguards

The website will soon be up and running, allowing the coalition to post official positions. I suggest that in its first positions the coalition officially promotes WWDOGA. Here is such a proposal that could be made to the coalition via the Agora:

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Title: Official statement

Author: MOGiS

Proposal: It is proposed that the coalition take this official position:

----

The coalition promotes the World Wide Day of Genital Autonomy

The World Wide Day of Genital Autonomy (WWDOGA) is a campaign day to promote genital autonomy, especially of infants, initiated by the German "Facharbeitskreis Beschneidungsbetroffener im MOGiS e.V.". Since 2013, it is celebrated on each 7 May in many countries. This date has been chosen because on May 7, 2012, the District Court of Cologne (Germany) has judged for the first time in Germany, that the circumcision of male children is an assault.

Suggestion for possible addition to the position statement:

The Coalition strongly urges all of its constituent member organizations to commemorate WWDOGA with a local action and to promote WWDOGA on their websites, to their network of alliances, to investigative reporters and to local media outlets (TV, radio, newspaper, etc).

Very good idea, which I have extended to "WWDOGA supporters" as that is what MOGiS calls them. If MOGiS agrees, this proposal could be proposed to the coalition via the Agora on 28 March for validation on 28 April, which would be just in time before 7 May to disseminate this position as widely as possible.

A very good text, Jean-Christophe, thank you very much for that.
There are a few little correcitions and additions, I would suggest:

What do you think about that?

Perfect. MOGiS should make this fix in the Wikipedia article I copied and pasted!

Here is the proposal submitted in the Agora at the end of March (I added Tim Hammond as a co-author, having understood his commitment in the USA to relay this global event).

I liked Tim's suggestion to urge the coalition's member organizations to commemorate WWDOGA.

"The Coalition strongly urges all of its constituent member organizations to commemorate WWDOGA ..."

Could we change the second paragraph to the following?

"The Coalition strongly urges all of its member organizations and supporters to commemorate WWDOGA with a local action and to promote WWDOGA on their websites, to their network of alliances, to investigative journalists and to local media outlets (TV, radio, newspaper, etc)."

Hello Steve,

I put in yellow the differences between your proposal (1) and the one validated by Werner (2):

1 - “The Coalition strongly urges all of its member organizations and supporters to commemorate WWDOGA with a local action and to promote WWDOGA on their websites, to their network of alliances, to investigative journalists and to local media outlets (TV, radio, newspaper, etc).”

2 - “Beyond its members, the Coalition strongly urges all its supporters to commemorate WWDOGA with a local action and to promote WWDOGA on their websites, to their network of alliances, to investigative reporters and to local media outlets (TV, radio, newspaper, etc).”

There is a problem with the Coalition adopting an official position that says "The Coalition strongly urges all of its members [...] to commemorate WWDOGA" since it is the members themselves who adopt the official positions. It's a bit like a government issuing a press release saying "The government asks each of its members to implement government policy": it would make readers smile, as if the mutinous ministers were not implementing government policy! The wording “Beyond its members, the Coalition strongly urges all its supporters to commemorate WWDOGA“ more subtly sends the message to members without risking ridicule. ok?

if ok, perhaps it’s better to say “Beyond its members, the Coalition strongly urges all of its supporters to commemorate WWDOGA”?

As for the replacement of "reporters" by "journalists", not being an English speaker I cannot judge, then no objection.

I do not see a problem with saying, "The Coalition strongly urges all of its member organizations and supporters to commemorate WWDOGA ..." I'm curious what other people think.

Werner suggested changing "investigative reporters" to "investigative journalists." In American English "investigative reporters" is more common. I do not know about British English or Australian English. My preference is is "investigative reporters."

Perhaps we should put out a call for ideas to the 70 WWDOGA "supporters" to come up with the most effective types of action possible internationally, every 7 May. A global concept would allow a unification of actions in all countries and thus a better visibility in the media.

Example of (futurist) media action : Equip all WWDOGA supporters with large umbrellas with the WWDOGA visual clearly visible on the whole surface of the umbrella (this visual could incorporate the logo of The Bodyguards for a better synergy, see the thread on the ICASM logo) We could purchase a satellite service to photograph all significant concentrations of umbrellas on 7 May around the world for 24 hours. These photos would be assembled into a single very short clip (e.g. 20 seconds) that would serve as a trailer for each WWDOGA. Year after year, we would be able to visually measure, at a glance, the progress of our cause.

WWDOGA 2021 feedback - Huge congratulations to the MOGiS team who organised and managed the WWDOGA 2021, WOW!

Personally, I think that a turning point was reached in 2020 with the use of videos instead of a physical meeting in Germany as in previous years, due to COVID19. At that time it was a use of video conferencing to compensate for the lack of a physical meeting. But in 2021, WWDOGA has moved up a gear by using video conferencing to do more than just a physical meeting. I found the progress in 2021 to be very significant with the extensive live streaming throughout 7 May and the use of chatboxes allowing interaction with the audience with a greater sense of participation.

I was impressed with:

  • the great international diversity of speakers and languages used, which gives the impression that a real global community is being formed (thanks to WWDOGA)

  • the diversity of approaches. When leaving this day, one has the impression of knowing much better, in a short time, what is happening all over the world in the service of genital autonomy (interventions of Kahal, Intakt Norden, Intact Denmark, Peter Adler / 15 Square, feminist and anti-FGM organisations, etc). There is a feeling that a "unification" is taking place, rather than the traditional fragmentation, and that we are truly part of a new community.

Moreover, this new way of preparing and running the WWDOGA gives an idea of the potential that could be developed in the coming years:

  • simultaneous use of video-conference meetings to complement face-to-face meetings in different parts of the world

  • merging the international symposium on genital autonomy into the WWDOGA, annually around 7 May.

This 2021 edition also shows the importance of building up a pool of skills for the future in order to achieve a technically "perfect" system, which can be mobilised for any event based on videoconferencing:

  • process "organisation" skills: before / during / after

  • in live facilitation skills (Victor, like Michael for the coalition, is very good)

  • technical communication skills: perfect command of Zoom, sound/image mixing, web integration, text writing, etc.
