Hello all,
We have wrapped the business meeting and will have some stuff coming up for membership to contribute on soon. It was a pleasure to chat with those who were able to make some or all of the session! The general consensus is that a bit of IP rebranding is in order
within NCTE, but we should take a “rebuilding year” to focus on doing what we do best, demonstrating value, and accentuating the moral and cultural components of our labor as IP advocates. We may explore building an extramural presence in the next year to
establish more memory.
- First and foremost, we need nominations for our new Junior Chair! Thomas will be stepping into my seat as of this time, and I’m looking forward to his leadership!
- We have one nomination standing so far:
Kathy Anders, T&MU - ACRL Liaison, AMA member, and Graduate Studies Librarian (Nominated, Mike – Seconded, Alex).
- Please submit additional nominations over the coming week to the mailing list.
- When public nomination process ends, I will work with Thomas to establish a secure Qualtrics portal for everyone to vote.
- Strategic planning and drafting of a report to the NCTE community on IP’s criticality as a locus for changes to post-covid university life, business, and practices
- It would be great to solicit some case studies, sources, and position statements from members to support this with content
- We can get together a collaborative document soon.
- I’m happy to do graphic design and layout (professional Indesign nerd) if there’s an interest in really doing a job.
- Initial planning for the Standing Group panel – current theme identified as
IP, Labor, and Open Movements, example topics including:
- The Grift of Predatory Open Access Platforms
- F/OSS Literacy and the Disempowerment of Digital Humanities in Campus IT
- IP Risks at Small Universities under Disaster Capitalism
- The Conflict between Austerity and Elsevier (GET THEM OUT, MIKE SAYS)
- IP Abuse Whitewashing and Propagandizing (e.g. Elsevier, SAGE, TurnItIn)
- Linguistic Justice and Student IP Ownership
- Election business (we did not make quorum in the remote call, moving to async on the mailing list)
- Access to a cloud-stored recording of the session when it is ready for your review and comment
Thank you all again for a productive year (circumstances notwithstanding). Hope to see many of you next year in Chicago!
Very Respectfully,
Alex
