Linking up several cheaper PCs via LAN

I need some help in setting up a classroom of about 20
cheap PCs (say 386/486).
cheap PCs (say 386/486).
I would like these PCs to be linked to a file and print
server.
What sort of server should I have, the operating system
and/or network operating system?
Also, what sort of LAN topology would be recommended in
this situation.
This is a intermediate primary school, so would a mirror
server be an overhead?
Please advice!!!!
I am looking at cost effective solutions.
