Some Award-BIOS systems (which it sounds like you might have) have
trouble running ATA66 drives on systems where the chipset doesn't support
it. Disabling ATA66 at the drive interface, as you have seen, usually
fixes the problems.
The BIOS detects ATA66, but the board can't deliver that.
