Hello,
The PIIX3 does not support Ultra DMA transfers. Your hard drive
will function properly with the PIIX3 but it will not obtain UDMA
transfer rates.
There are several software and hardware requirements to implement
Ultra DMA. These requirements can be found at:
http://developer.intel.com/design/pcisets/busmastr/bmfaq.htm.
Here is a summary:
Hardware:
- The system must have an Ultra DMA compatible IDE hard drive.
- The system must have an Ultra DMA IDE controller such as the
Intel(R) 82371AB PIIX4 component found in the 82430TX and 82440LX
chip sets
Software:
- Microsoft Windows* 95 must be configured to correctly recognize
the Intel 82371AB bus mastering IDE controller. This can be
accomplished with the Intel 82371xB INF update installer
available on the web at:
http://developer.intel.com/design/pcisets/drivers/inf_update.htm.
The device manager should read:
Intel 82371AB/EB PCI Bus Master IDE Controller
Primary IDE controller (dual FIFO)
Secondary IDE controller (dual FIFO)
- The OSR2 version of Microsoft Windows* 95 (4.00.950B) includes
native support for DMA protocols. Even with a non-Intel
motherboard and a non-Intel chip set, you can click on the
particular disk drive in the device manager, go to properties and
the settings tab, then check the DMA check box.
For your hardware to support UDMA you will have to upgrade to a
motherboard which uses a southbridge that supports UDMA. The
PIIX4 and PIIX4E are southbridges that support UDMA and are found
in the 430TX, 440LX, 440BX, and 440EX chip sets.
