ID tracking in chips

Help!

I am thinking of upgrading from a PII to a faster PIII, and it is my
understanding that Intel has removed the processor ID in chips from their
next generation PIII processors and from future processors.

Is there any way to tell if one has the new processor, as opposed to the old
one, as far as the ID tracking is concerned?
