Hi,
I have a peer-to-peer network with the above mentioned OS (only two
machines), and need help installing the NetportExpress XL print server. The
print server is not even seen on the network, despite various tweakings of
the IPX frame types on the machines and on the print server itself. I have
IPX, TCP/IP, and NetBUEI installed, but will install anything to make it
work. I have tried detection with the NetportExpress software and Web
JetAdmin to no avail. According to the hub, the connection is fine.
Does anyone know a method of getting this print server to work with
Win2k Pro? (Or if it is even possible for that matter?) Does the print
server need to be connected via a crossover cable instead of a patch cable?
Thanks a bunch.

Mine doesn't show on a Win2K Pro workstation either, but I manage mine from
NT4 Server, so it isn't a major problem for me (yet). This support article
from the Intel web site might give a clue - looks like it requires NetBEUI
in order to be discovered.

Well, I have NetBEUI installed on the machines, and it still can't be found.
Is there a way to set a default networking protocol in Windows 2000? Also,
is the RX light supposed to stay on permanently when power is connected to
the print server and it is plugged into a hub (the TX light flickers
constantly as well)? Could that be a part of the problem?

I decided to explore this further, and was able to manage my XL on Win2K
after:

1. Installing the latest Netport Manager (5.41a) from
http://appsr.cps.intel.com/scripts-df/filter_results.asp?strOSs=19&strTypes=
DRV%2CSPH%2CUTL&ProductID=278&OSFullName=Windows*+2000&submit=Go%21
(Software & Drivers at
http://support.intel.com/support/netport/vintage/index.htm). This version
claims Windows 2000 support.
2. Adding NetBEUI. I tested prior to adding NetBEUI and the Netport didn't
appear. No problem once NetBEUI was added.

My older version of Netport Manager (the one I'm using on NT) doesn't find
the Netport on Win2K.

FYI, in the Options / Netport Manager dialog, I have the defaults (I think)
specified, but I was able to get it working with only NetBIOS over TCP/IP
checked (once NetBEUI was installed - go figure).

The TX and RX LEDs are solid green most of the time with my XL (unless there
is traffic).

I did have a problem once where my XL wouldn't RBL and wouldn't appear in
Netport Manager on NT. In this case, the status LED was amber or red, I
forget which (probably amber). Problem solved by serial flash via
http://support.intel.com/support/netport/vintage/6051.htm. But if yours is
green, it has loaded its RBL code. If you still can't get it working, and
you can't see it on NT either, you might try this.

Good luck...

From the flickering light and the RX light on all the time, either your
cable is bad or the print server is faulty. Get the cable sorted first and
then try it again. You didn't say whether you can ping the printserver, have
you tried.

I don't know the print server's default TCP/IP address, so I don't think I
can ping it, right?

if you don't know its IP address you may try to ping its name like you can
ping a computer by its name. ie. ping jetdirect, it's some time since I have
messed with a jetdirect but i think it would work that way.

You should be able to ping it by name!
