Can TCP be used without IP and can IP be used independently of TCP. For
instance on a LAN could TCP be used without IP if the LAN did not connect to
the Internet?
Thanks

Sure, you can write your own TCP over LAN software if you want.

In theory, yes, but why bother? There's no reason why you couldn't or
shouldn't run IP on a local network.

IPs are used on a local network also. Sure but you would have to still
assign a specific number to each individual machine due to the fact
computers talk to each other numerically. Of course you could use the
computer name for routing if you are in no hurry. It would be like talking
Greek to a Chinese person, there's got to be an interpreter.

tcp is a transport layer prot -- it *uses* IP to connect to other devices
(IP is a network layer prot).

with that in mind, sure you could roll your own IP layer prot in order to
carry TCP connections over it, but who would you connect to ?

one example of an alternative is TCP connections using IPX as a network
layer transport mechanism.

just remember to apply the OSI model to your thinking and you'll do fine :)
