A friend has a PC with a non-MMX Intel 133MHZ CPU.
He has a new READ/WRITE_CD_ROM that demands a 166MHZ CPU.

He has been given a 166 MHZ MMX CPU and wants to know if it can be used
in a motherboard designed for a non MMX CPU?

If yes, where can he get instructions regarding adpaters, jumpers to
set, etc?
Thank you for any help, Dave.

David,

Contact the system/motherboard's manufacturer to find out which processors are supported.

The Pentium with MMX requires a dual split-plane voltage of 2.8V core and 3.3V I/O. The non-MMX Pentium 133 is using a single voltage of between 3.3V and 3.5V for both core and I/O. This higher core voltage setting would damage the Pentium with MMX.

I would assume that your current motherboard does not support this voltage requirement. And you would need to use an adapter, such as those sold by Evergreen or Powerleap, to meet the necessary voltage requirements.
