Hi All,

Please help! Where can I find the USB Supplement (usbsupp.exe) for
Win95B for the AL440LX?

Thank you.
Allen

If you have Win95B, the file USBSUPP.EXE is in the following file path: D:\other\usb\usbsupp.exe. Replace D if your CD-ROM drive is not D. Otherwise, download the file from www.microsoft.com. Click on support, register, select support for Windows 95 and click on downloadable drivers and other files.

Regards,
Farhan

Hi Farhan,

Thank you for your reply. Strangely enough, my Win95 version 4.00.950B CD
does not have directory \other\usb !

www.microsoft.com does not have this file on site either. Where else do you
think I can get? Thank you.

Allen

Look at http://www.compren.com/dnload.html.
This file is only supplied by microsoft on the OSR2.1 CD.
It will say win95 with usb support on the cd.
You should be able to download it from Computer Renaissance at the above url

Troy,

I installed the Intel INF update followed by USBSUPP.EXE you told me to
download at http://www.compren.com/dnload.html. Thank you very much --
finally found it!

After two reboots, Win95 found "Standard Universal PCI to USB Host
Controller" and is ready to install the driver. I clicked OK. It says cannot
find uhcd.sys and usbd.sys in PRECOPY1.CAB in the Win95 CD. So I guess my
installation failed. Where can I find uhcd.sys and usbd.sys?

Why doesn't MS make this thing easier!?
Thank you.

The files should be in the \windows\system directory. You might want to check
out my Win95 install guide on my site:

Hope it helps,
Bill

Hi Bill,

Thank you very much for your Install Guide. It's great. My system finally
has USB driver loaded!!!

The only problem is that I can't get the Intel Bus Master IDE driver to
install. The setup program says that my system must have Win95* and PIIX Bus
Master IDE Controller. How can I tell if I have the controller? When I boot
up Win95 the system says it's trying to install the controller driver, but
failed because it can't find the driver.

Thank you.

Hi Bill,

Another issue with the AGP driver is that in my ATI 3D Rage Pro (AGP
version) resource tab, it shows the following conflicts.

Memory Range F6000000 - F6FFFFFF used by:
Intel 82443LX Pentium(r) II Processor to AGP Controller
Memory Range FECFE000 - FECFEFFF used by:
Intel 82443LX Pentium(r) II Processor to AGP Controller
Input/Output Range E800 - E8FF used by:
Intel 82443LX Pentium(r) II Processor to AGP Controller

Should I ignore them?

Thank you.

Don't bother installing the Intel Bus Master drivers with the AL440LX. I've got
a comparison of the two drivers on my site:

http://www2.interconnect.net/wselk/bmide.html

Aside from the performance issues, the Intel Bus Master drivers are the root of
most of the shutdown problems with this motherboard and BIOS versions 6 and
higher.

Hope it helps,
Bill

Don't Panic.

This memory conflict is normal and purely a cosmetic issue. Windows 95
doesn't understand how the AGP controller can access memory directly
(vice having to go throught the processor) so it chalks it up as a
conflict. It's normal and nothing to worry about.

Hi Bill

In your Install Guide, I found SetupEx.exe mentioned for BMIDE. I believe I
have this file. It's an Intel 82371xB INF Update Installer. But it only
enables the win95 to recognize the existence of BMIDE -- Win95 still can't
find the driver to install!

The INF Update Installer (setupex.exe) makes the proper adjustments so that
Win95 can recognize the hardware properly. Windows will install its own drivers
for the hardware. You should get three entries under hard drive controllers:

Intel 82371AB PCI Bus Master IDE Controller
Primary IDE Controller (dual fifo)
Secondary IDE Controller (dual fifo)

To enable DMA for each hard drive, open the properties window for each of your
hard drives through the device manager. There should be a check box marked
"DMA." Check the box and you should be on your way.

Don't confuse this with the Intel Bus Master drivers (bmide_95.exe). I've found
that the Intel drivers cause shutdown problems on most computers using BIOS 6 or
higher. I've done some testing on my machine, and found that I get better
performance from the standard MS drivers than with the Intel drivers -- you may
want to do some testing of your own.

Hope this helps,
Bill

Hi Bill,

Win95 is not able to find the driver for the IDE controller. Is it in
\windows\system directory? Or do I need to download it somewhere?

Thanks.
