when was the last time that you blew out the dust in your computer... I'm
suspecting that it's built up on your CPU heatsink/fan and is causing your
CPU to overheat.

sure. i'd recommend you take the whole system apart, clean the contacts of
all the plug-in cards, memory sticks, processor etc with clean alcohol.
then reseat everything.
this is in addition to what above posters have suggested.
what o/s are you using? do a defrag, or, in the case of win2k/xp - do a
disk cleanup, followed by chkdisk, followed by a F8 boot (safe mode) and
defrag from there - it will be more comprehensive that way.
if above general tweaking does not resolve problem, then you should start
suspecting hardware peripherals for imminent failure. memory, hard disk
(back up!), motherboard, processor ... these components last, but they are
not immortal.
