Yo, Folks!

I'm sittin here scratchin' my chin. "Duh, why're ya doin' that, Tony?" I
hear you all ask. Well... it's like this...

A local PC seller (The PC Company) here in New Zealand has a Pentium 4
1.7GHz machine with lots of extras at a pretty good price. The machine
also utilizes PC2100 DDR RAM. I like to know what I'm buying, so I asked
some questions.

Here's the site - it's their 'Mega Deal 3' under the microscope.
http://www.thepccompany.co.nz/default.asp

I asked the salesguy what mainboard is used in the machine. He said it
was an 'ASUS P somethingoruther' - his words, not mine.

Funny thing is, when I checked on AsusTek's site (
http://www.asus.com.tw/Products/Motherboard/index.html ), I could not
find a P4 mainboard that, as yet, supports DDR-RAM!

Thinking the salesguy might have confused the Asus mainboard with
another type, I e-mailed the PC seller's HQ and asked them what
mainboard was used. They promptly replied 'ChainTech 7sid'.

So, I had a looksee on ChainTech's site ( http://www.chaintech.com.tw/ )
for this wonderful new mainboard capable of merging P4 chipsets with
DDR-RAM. The ChainTech7sid supports DDR-RAM, but the board is for the
AMD chipset. ChainTech's other boards for the P4 only support PC133
SDRAM modules. Couldn't find a P4 board for DDR-RAM anywhere on their
site.

Now, I know there are mainboards now shipping for AMD chipsets and DDR;
but I thought that, as yet, there are none for P4 and DDR. I'd be quite
happy to be corrected on this.

What do you Folks think? Is there some other mainboard they could be
using to utilize P4 with DDR? Or is someone telling - and selling -
porkies?

Cheers, Tony McKee (still scratchin')

We should expect to see DDR based board for the P4 in december or early
2002. These boards will be VIA based.

Intel is supposed to have some P4 DDR board as well, no idea about the
timeframe for those boards (hopefully Q1 2002)

Cheers New Zealander !!! From Canada

I'm using a Shuttle AV40 with my P4. It uses DDR. I believe other DDR based P4
boards are entering the market.

Why do you want a Pentium 4? An AMD Athlon XP processor offers great
performance at a great price.
