i just bought a 2.2 GHz socket 478-- and in reading the manual that comes in
the retail box version, found that some of these processors ship with
regular old heat sink compound. so it is my belief that if you use some high
quality stuff, you should be OK. but i would peel the old square off and
clean the heatsink thoroughly. i messed mine up, too. those darn high
tension brackets scared me when my brand new motherboard had 1\4" worth of
deflection!!!
