I bought following setup not so long ago:
ASUS p34vx with 128 (133Mhz) DRAM, VIA chipset, now with bios 1.06
INTEL Pentium III 600 Mhz (133FSB) processor
ASUS 6800 Deluxe (Nvidia geforce)
Tekram 390 (160) SCSI card
ibm 45 gig UDMA66 and fastest scsi 9gig drive one zip-250 drive
added a realtek 8029 pci networkcard that i saved from an older
configuration as well as a plextor 40x scsi cd-rom and a plextor 4-2-20 cd
writer
i have used both default settings in the bios as well as maximum performance
settings -still at 600 Mhz for my processor though-
and i installed
Windows ME , with asus 5.33 6800 videodriver, pccillin (part of the mb
package)
i installed office2000, and all of the latest ASUS drivers for e.g. VIA
i installed my printersoftware (HP3100 all-in-one laserjet) and my scanner
(HP5200C-usb)
and i have used memturbo and zonealarm.
i have put my swapfile on the fastest (scsi) disk
I got suspicious about the performance of my setup, when i experienced
relatively slow startups of ME and slow startups of programs in ME.
A friend of mine has the following setup
AOPEN 6ABplus with BX chipset, all is operating at 66 Mhz FSB.
one intel Pentium II processor operating at 233 Mhz
128 Mb (66Mhz) Ram
integrated scsi controller
matrox ... G200 videocard
an UDMA33 IDE disk and a 5 years old scsi disk
he uses one ide cd-rom (aopen) and one scsi cd-writer (yamaha 4-4-16)
he has installed a printer (hp970) and a scanner (epson) as well as an older
epson printer by using an extra -isa- lpt card.
With this memturbo software one can see how much load the processor has at a
certain time.
Guess what:
this guys setup outperforms (stopwatch) my setup with a factor 2 !!!!!!!!!!
also when looking at processor load one could imagine that a pentium III at
600 Mhz should outperform a pentium II at 233 Mhz. This is not the case. My
processor load is almost all of the time near a 100% (ranges form 60 to
100), when his processor load is sometimes near hundred percent (range 30 -
100) but more often at 75.
How can this be?
Anyone?
I tried various settings in the bios. Through ctrl-alt-del and killing
certain programs in memory (like the antivirus, the asusprobe and
smartdoctor software) i got a slightly better picture, but still worse then
the old setup of one of my friends!
Is this because the combination of P3V4X with an Asus geforce card (that
promises to unload the cpu!!) sucks?
Should i change some components?
Or can a motherboard with a VIA chipset never compete with a motherboard
with an older Intel BX chipset. (eventhough there should be a big difference
from the processor alone)
I am completely puzzled. I do not know what to do. Can anyone think why this
happens. Does anyone have a clue how to corrrect this?
Otherwise i should probably sell my stuff and buy the older technology, as
it seems to work better.
Although the setup itself is mostly stable enough to working uninterrupted
for one and a half to two hours, i bought this kit to have a faster
machine....
If anyone can help. great
wim
thanx for your help guys
