we bought an AST 486sx33 from Radio Shack about 4 years ago. It is run by an old Intel processor, and I would like to know the feasability of upgrading the processor to a Pentium. Can anybody help me - I can't even get an answer from the tech support at AST.

The first question would be, is your Intel 486 CPU soldered to your mainboard?
If it is, your mainboard would have to have another socket for an upgrade
CPU. If your mainboard has a detachable CPU or a math co-processer socket (or
socket 5) then there are quite a few upgrade options available to you, at low
prices and "no fuss, no muss" so to speak. Some upgrades require switching
jumper settings, some don't. Try contacting some retailers, such as:
www.warehouse.com , www.elek-tek.com or www.cdw.com , and browse "CPU
upgrades." You can call their 1-800 numbers and ask for any further
specifications of their product. Evergreen Technologies makes several 486 CPU
upgrades, and their products are listed on the above listed www sites.
Hope this info helped.

Hi,

The OverDrive(R) Processor Upgrade Guide at
http://www.intel.com/overdrive/upgrade/index.htm
contains a list of systems that are compatible and not compatible with
the OverDrive processors. If your system is not in the Upgrade Guide,
Intel does not have sufficient information about your system to include
it.
