I realise that MMX is an advatageous technology but I don't quite know
which programs out there take advantage of MMX technology. I would like
to know which programs in the the following classes make use of MMX
instruction sets:
1. productivity software
2. video
3. audio
4. gaming
5. netservers/clients
6. database software

Here are a few general points about MMX implementation:

uh, depends

Great benefits of using MMX in many of these progs. Both in creation and
playback/view.
Progs like Winamp deconde MP3s a lot faster with MMX enabled--especially on
slow PCs. Graphics and video coding programs can make extensive use of MMX
with large percentage gains.

Many games benefit a lot. Can help graphics rendering a lot and can be
implemented in other ways. Can make a significant difference in achieved FPS
when enabled.

Not sure on how it is actually implemented, how often, nor how much gain
actually occurs. I can imagine that the types of calculations being
performed in some database applications would be efficient with MMX.

MMX inst. need not be limited to MultiMedia.
