I want to add an AGP card to my PC, how do I know which one will be the
right one for the PC.

CPU is 1000/256/133 1.7v 3101A219 - 0299 - SL4C8

MOBO is MSI 815EMT Pro.

Thanks.

Well I have been doing some looking around on the web for various bits of
info on this subject and I have discovered that a 4x card should do the job
nicely, basically because I have a 4x AGP 1.5v slot on the MB.

I have since learned, assuming that the info I read is correct, it is best
to use a 4x card.
An 8x card requires 0.8v to run it and this could cause problems if the 8x
was run in a 4x AGP slot with 1.5v, this being nearly double the required
voltage, so one to watch out for in future.

I now have a new dilemma, one for which I cant seem to find any info on,
relating to the monitor.
As the monitor has a max 60hz, how is a graphics card going to improve on
this, can it improve on the picture quality.
Whats the DVI thing about? if I connect my monitor to the DVI will I have a
digital display when browsing the web.
I have read somewhere that there can be an improvement in speed if you have
a graphics card installed, I assume this is because it runs the monitor
leaving the system ram free for other tasks..........

Thanks again. :)

You will be fine running an AGP 8x card in this mobo. The voltage isn't an
issue as your board isn't AGP 1x, only 2x & 4x. This means you should be
fine running an 8x card (although it will run at 4x speeds). I have an MSI
GeForce 4 Ti4800 running in a 694Pro running at 2x speed!

1st point - If the monitor has a max vertical sync of 60Hz then you have no
problems as XP sets its refresh rate to 60Hz anyway. It is only a problem
for powerfull graphics cards which can generate more than 60fps while
playing games, you would then normally set the refresh rate manually and
disable V-sync. You will probably *not* have to worry about this on your p3
system!

2nd point - The DVI connector (white) is a digital cable for connecting to a
LCD monitor - supposed to give better colour vibrance etc etc. The blue
connector is the analogue connector (VGA). I'd say use the blue unless you
have an LCD monitor.

3rd point - Yes fitting a dedicated graphics card can *help* to speed up
your pc. The motherboard will no longer snatch RAM to dedicate to the
onboard graphics leaving more to run xp or use as a pagefile. Plus onboard
graphics is usually the lowest grade graphics at the time of release - and
cant be upgraded obviously.

I would say if you want a decent graphics card look for either the geforce
fx5900 or radeon 9800 pro, cheap on ebay plus your p3 will never exceed what
these cards can achieve.
