Notebook does not boot if plugged-in

SonyVaio PCG-GRV616G, 256mb RAM, Intel 4 - 2.60 Ghz, XP Pro - SP 2

A strange problem, if I shut it down it won't boot-up unless I unplug
the power cord.

When it's plugged in then just the fans and the CD-ROM start,
everything else seems dead.

Has anyone heard of anything similar?
