My mistake for not clarifying.
I did mean the short 'e' sound or the schwa, and not long.
I was, actually, just rafting on the river a few weeks ago.
But, take the time to get down to southern Oregon and run the Rogue and any
number of others down there or over to Eastern Oregon and give the Snake a
shot at beating you up. Either of these will abuse you much more than any
of us visitors to these forums :-)

Actually, the "u" sound in "shut" should be more like the "u" in "music",
but less like the "ou" sound in "you". I guess I'm not making too much sense
but I don't think that "u" sound is used in English.
