I am planning on building a dual processor PC using the Tyan Tiger 230T
Mainboard and two 1.0 GHz
PIII processors.

When I read http://support.intel.com/support/processors/dp1.htm it says:

Note: Pentium III processors based with 256 KB cache and using .13µ process
technology do not support dual processor. Pentium III processors with 512 KB
cache
and using .13µ process technology do support dual processing.

Yet, I've seen dual 1.0 GHz PIII servers with 256 KB caches.
Please see: http://www.compaq.com/products/quickspecs/10495_na/10495_na.PDF
Does anyone know why this apparent conflict exists?

Thanks

I do not see a conflict.

I do see how you chose to ignore the .13 micron (Tualatin) note being
non-existent in the Compaq link.

"Does anyone know why this apparent conflict exists?" Because you created
it.

Intel chose not to support the 256 cache tualatins as dual solely for
marketing reasons. Cheap dual processors would cut into their Xeon market.
They are leaving the 512 cache CPUs as a way to compete against the Athlon
MPs. I do not know for sure whether Intel has disabled the 256 PIIIs
Tualatins or are just choosing not to support them.
