I am building my first system. My son gave me an Intel D850GB motherboard
and the 1.7GHz P4 processor. Intel wants heat sink/fan BOLTED directly to
the case through the provided holes in the motherboard. What is the best
case for this motherboard-processor combo? I do not want to warp the
motherboard.

All the cases I find at places like casedepot.com claim to be "p4 ready"
which doesn't sound like 100% compatible. I am also concerned about a lack
of instructions. I hate to buy a case and all that RDram etc and not be able
to put a functioning computer together.

The "P4 ready" refers to the power supply. There are three power
connections. the main ATX supply, the auxillary and another with just two
connections. As for bolting the heatsink fan to the case, I'm mystified.
However, if you want a decent moderately inexpensive case you might like to
look at the Globalwin 802. You buy this without a PSU and choose one. I have
an Enermax 465VPE which is quite expensive but its very quiet and well
engineered.
Hope this helps.

It's true, on the D850GB (socket 423) the heatsink is bolted through
the board into the case, in effect it is like having 4 extra
motherboard pillars. A "P4 ready" case should have these extra 4
holes. You could add a nut on the underside of the mobo and avoid
needing the holes I think, but you run the risk of bending the mobo
because the heatsink retaining clips do not form a sturdy frame like
the S478 (ha!).

Hey John'-
I just got finished putting together almost exactly what you are doing.
I'm using an "Antec Performance Series SX635 Mini Tower Case" I got it from
CompUSA. Cost $100 bucks. It's got a 350 watt SmartPower supply installed
(don't skimp on your power supply now, you won't regret it later) one case
fan, places for two more fans, lots of drive bays, etc.. But what I like
best is the EASE of getting to everything inside this case. Check it out!!
And by the way, I have the same board and boy was I surprised when I figured
out there was no place to plug in the monitor. But ya know what? I like
what I built hella better than the Compaq i was cussing at all the time.
Good luck
