Dear Craig,

Transgender Lobby Day 2017 is underway!

More than 200 participants from nearly 40 states have arrived in Washington, DC to fight for the progress we’ve achieved, and the challenges we face—including many meeting with their elected officials for the first time.

And we’re off to a rousing start, motivated by remarks from former President of the Tennessee Transgender Political Coalition Dr. Marissa Richmond and Rep. Joe Kennedy III (D-MA) (see the livestream here), chair of the Transgender Equality Task Force in Congress.

“The courage to share your stories, and to speak out is paramount. The compassion, dignity and grace to speak with people, even when you aren’t extended the same courtesies, is one of the reasons progress has been made, and officials like me have been inspired.” – Rep. Joe Kennedy III

This morning’s program starts with remarks from House Democratic Leader Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), before a full day of training and lobbying on Capitol Hill.

Check out Leader Pelosi’s remarks on Facebook Live here!

Later today, participants will meet face-to-face with their elected members of Congress and staff, as concerned and engaged constituents, representing their communities about equality and protections for transgender people.

From healthcare access and coverage to protecting students and the right to be visible in public spaces, attendees will visit more than 120 Members of Congress and/or their staff.

“Lobby Day is about ensuring trans people can achieve simple parity and full equality by participating in society and having our voices heard on the issues affecting us” – Raffi Freedman-Gurspan, NCTE Director of External Affairs

Despite the uncertainty from the current Administration, we must keep trying to make this a more perfect union. We can do that by sharing your stories and your concerns with your elected officials.

This is your Lobby Day!

Be sure to follow the conversation, photos and experiences online, using #TransLobbyDay and #TransEqualityNow. Tune into our Facebook Live broadcasts and for making your voices heard.
