Hi fellow knowledgeable persons. "Some drink at the fountain of knowledge...Others just gargle."

My niece (fourtyish, artist and accountant) had this interesting dream about the cellular biology of cancer. How does metaphor of the dream connect with a scientific metaphor?

I'm asking you to give it some thought and respond to it, either by the newsgroup or backchannel to me at Phillip W. Warren phillip...@telus.net (these modes of reply I will forward to her) or respond directly to her at Sheri Miller  sher...@sbcglobal.net

The essence of the dream as she sees it:

This describes a "missing link" in the process that has not been noticed yet by researchers, or had been misunderstood. Her aim is to put it out there just in case it helps someone with thinking about the process of  cancer.

The question she would like to have answered:

"Is it true that cells sometimes 'grab' structures from other cells to repair themselves?"  In the dream, this tendency is what had evolved.

Start of dream description

Dream 12/25/2008:

This concerns the ability of the cells to "think" or act on their own behalf, as if they are individuals with free will. If the DNA in a human cell becomes damaged, many people have inherited a trait whereby the cell can "reach out" to a neighboring cell and grab the material it needs to repair itself. Not all people inherit this tendency, and that is one reason why certain types of cancer appear to be inherited. I am not sure from the dream how the cell "reaches out" to the other cell, frankly. It may be just cellular communication, or it may be some sort of physical contact or aggression. I think it just grabs it somehow.

Once the cell has obtained what it needs from a neighbor, several things can go wrong. 1) The cell in its efforts to repair itself may grab incomplete, inappropriate, or damaged material. If it assimilates the wrong structures, this may impair its ability to survive or do its job. 2) the neighbor cell now has been damaged, and may not survive as a healthy cell. 3) The neighbor cell may also "panic" once it "realizes" it has been damaged, and take an action such as multiplying inappropriately or failing to conduct its normal routine due to the stress or damage.

If the neighbor cell then also reaches out and grabs material from another cell, this may start a chain reaction where whole groups of cells "panic" and begin altering themselves and each other in an effort to survive. This is one reason why some cancers spread very rapidly.

It should be noted that not all people who have this trait are unlucky enough to have it go awry as described above. This ability of the body evolved a long time ago and has had some success, therefore the tendency has remained in the population and for some people it actually works fine and is a benefit. It may be associated with genes that have been identified as risk factors.

This does not mean that any of the prior discoveries related to cancer are incorrect. Rather, this is a "missing link" in the process. It is actually a potential trigger for cancer because the cells can multiply rapidly when in this "panic" mode. The reason this behavior has not been found is that it happens in an instant and cannot be seen by humans in real time. It happens so fast that it would take a very high-speed camera set up at just the right time in order to detect it.

Strange enough for you? I have never had a dream about medical issues before. I have since gone back to normal dreams about cheesecake and werewolves!
