Join Peoples Housing Project on Monday, September 19, 2022 at 5:30 p.m. at 1 Civic Plaza NW to pressure City Council to pass a resolution demanding the State Legislature end the prohibition on rent control at the 2023 Legislative Session!

Beginning on August 1, Peoples Housing Project and Albuquerque residents have mobilized to every City Council meeting to make public comments demanding that City Council and Mayor Keller take urgent and drastic steps to put an end to residents being driven into poverty and homelessness by cruel rising rental prices. In Albuquerque, rent has gone up more than 31% since March 2020 and dozens of families are evicted from their homes every week. There is only one way to stop this cruel displacement: end the statewide prohibition on rent control and direct all necessary resources into urgently building and acquiring high-quality, publicly owned, safe, clean, affordable housing.

Despite the outpouring of support from dozens of Albuquerque residents demanding action, City Council claims that they can do nothing to address the housing crisis! We will be rallying to demand action now!

Peoples Housing Project demands:

1. End the Prohibition on Rent Control

2. End homelessness with housing, not policing

3. Ban “short-term rentals” (like Airbnb)

4. Urgently build and acquire high-quality, publicly owned, affordable housing

5. Ban landlords from using criminal background checks

6. Ban landlords from screening applicants based on evictions, debt and credit

7. No more application fees, pet fees, and other pre-tenancy charges

8. Require all landlords to accept vouchers, veterans housing benefits, other subsidies

9. Rent should not exceed a small fraction of one’s income

10. Reduce rent for all SSI and SSDI recipients

11. Provide free legal representation to renters

12. Regularly inspect bad landlord’s properties, punish all violations
