Ihave the titanium version with North America topo map loaded. I've loaded a couple other maps via Garmin Express. On the watch, they show up in Map Manager as 'queued'. But they never load when I sync the watch and the only option I'm given is to remove them from the 'queue', whatever that is. I've talked to Garmin. They say 'interesting' and promise to look into it, but haven't got back to me. Any suggestions?
To amplify this. The watch must be connected to a power source and WiFi to download maps using Map Manager. The maps will be not be downloaded using Map Manager if the watch is connected to a computer; it has to be an external power source. I'd guess the requirement is likely because the download using MM can take hours.
No success. It does say it is downloading the maps, but it doesn't. And each time I disconnect the watch from the wall, the watch face is blank (dead). It restarted after a few minutes the first two times. This time it's taking longer. ... Finally came back on after fifteen minutes. No new maps. Though Map Manager claims it's actually downloading maps. Back to Garmin, I guess.
I have a new Windows 10 computer and an old v2 DVD of TOPO U.S. 24K Southwest. (I also have a GPSMap 62s on which some or all of this DVD is loaded, but it's currently in another state so inaccessible.) What is involved in getting the old installer (last used under Windows 7) to run under Windows 10 so I can install all or part of these 24K maps onto my PC for use in BaseCamp?
I found one very old post at -software/mac-windows-software/f/basecamp-windows/126647/can-t-install-topo-us-24k-southwest-v3-maps-on-gpsmap-60csx suggesting that I can accomplish this "by having Windows fix compatibility issues with the software." Does anyone know if this works? Are there any other tricks that I will need?
If it is failing due to a missing .net framework you can download and install that directly from microsoft. Restart your computer and try again. If the installer isn't starting up when the dvd is inserted, open the dvd via Windows and double click on the installer. I've installed a v2 dvd of a different area and don't recall having any issues other than possibly the installer not starting automatically.
SUSSAMB -- The thing is, the topos themselves aren't going to change until the land contours change (and the USGS re-surveys, I guess). I'm not in it for the streets, only for hiking. And it is (or was!) extremely useful to have the maps stand-alone on the PC when the GPSMap 62s is not available (like now).
Perhaps you know if any of the newer topo offerings by Garmin are both compatible for upload to the GPSMap 62s (I don't actually remember how I did this right now!) and capable of installation on a PC? -- Regards, 6430617
Bad news, All: I just tried installing from the original DVD on my Windows 10 (still 1909) system. After I clicked past some Microsoft warning about an unrecognized driver, and after I accepted the EULA, setup.exe got stuck in a loop at 57%, where it said it was "Updating component registration..." Although the DVD drive continued to spin and to "kerchunk" at regular intervals, it seemed clear that no progress was being made, so I killed setup in Task Manager. Eyelet99's very nice link didn't solve the problem, as I had no issue with .NET versions being needed.
Add/Remove Programs shows that some additional "Garmin USDB Drivers" were installed today (145 KB in addition to the pre-existing 572 KB installed a year ago). Needless to day, BaseCamp does not find the maps.
Update: I still have my old Windows 7 machine, which has these 24K topo maps installed and BaseCamp still running (though I dare not connect it to the Internet). On the Win7 machine they are located in a 2.59 GB folder named "C:\Program Data\Garmin\Maps\TOPO U.S. 24K Southwest v2.gmap." I don't suppose there is any chance that copying this folder directly from one computer to the other (assuming I could guess where to put it on the Wind10 machine) could be made to work... Anybody had success with anything this extreme? -- 6430617
You might want to you google "TOPO U.S. 24K DVD v2 in Windows 10" and read a wider selection of links to the Garmin and other forums. For example, one of these suggests that it might be worth reverting to BaseCamp version 4.6.2 and trying again?
In the meantime while you are figuring this out, to get you some mapping on your screen you might want to download some of the free IMG files for your area of interest - see the list of free map sources at the bottom of FAQ 3: This lists GPSFileDepot which is a rich resource:
Update 2: Garmin telephone tech support advised me to reboot my computer, try the install again, and wait for up to 1 hour after it appeared to hang up. (The tech also emailed me special instructions for manual installation in case "Updating component registration..." was actually causing the problem, but these weren't needed.) Simply waiting long enough solved the problem, allowing the TOPO U.S. 24K v2 DVD to install correctly. Now I'm using it in BaseCamp. I hope this may help the next guy who tries this installation on Windows 10!
Thank you for this! I just took my old disk from 2009 for a backpack doing tomorrow to load to new computer after old one died and had the same issue at 57%. It worked after I searched and found your post. Thanks for sharing - helped me!
I have a new Fenix 7 SS. It came with North America topo maps and it showed other regions I could install. When installing the Europe topo maps my watch got disconnected from Garmin Express. Now I cannot see Europe and other regions anymore in Map Manager. I completely reset and paired the watch to no avail - still cannot see other regions beyond North America. Any idea how I can see other regions again?
Our engineers are currently looking into the TopoActive regional maps not seen as available through either the watch Map Manager and Garmin Express using your computer. I will be updating this thread when the issue has been resolved.
Same issue for me, too on Fenix 7 (standard). (brand new arrived yesterday) Installed 2 maps and the the firmware update. After that both maps were visible on the device (I tested a track for the first and 2nd map) , but only map2 was displayed in Garmin Express. I am missing map1: (Central-Europe) and also missing an Icon to add any map. (I had change region from Europe complete to Europe Central to reduce file size).
After uninstalling both maps, I can not add any map any more. I even tried a firmware reset without success. I saved a copy of the img files, so was able to restore the content on the device. Both maps are displayed again, but I still can not add any new map. There is no message of insufficient memory. I think most users install their continent and forget the map manager. So it may be relevant only for users who use more than one continent.
Maybe, but after even after reset it did not work. I think it has to do something with changing region and fenix 7 license. It is not restricted, so should allow to mix maps. The software may be in a state of pending for doing an update first. Then it would show new maps. For any reason it indicates a pending update. I got a message on the watch of an available update for my 2nd. map, though I had installed it via express one moment before.
I have owned this watch (Fenix 7 small - sapphire solar) for a month and with a clear conscience I can tell you that it is a very good equipment and I am super satisfied. This situation with maps is the first disconvinient, which will hopefully be quickly resolved.
I did download contour lines + opentopomap turkey. they both shown on basecamp separately.
1- how to see two maps together?
2- I tried gmapstool to combine OpenTopoMap & contours turkey but failed !
I create a map for my area using OSM .img I get from bbbike and I combine it with contour lines every 10 meters. I generated the contour lines a while ago, but I think I got them from
viewfinderpanoramas.org (.hgt), and convert them to .img. Then I join them (using gmaptool) with the .img from bbbike. It is possible to get contour lines from bbikes too but they are every 40 m. ( -de-aventura-en-chihuahua-para-gps.html)
Did not know about this map! Nice looking one, but it really seems there are a lot of data cut out of from how it looks like on the web versus what gets put into the img file.
First things I noticed and that are a major downside against using this map is that intermittent waterways and even some non-intermittent are not rendered - like ditches. Also addresses and isolated dwellings not there.
Last week, I received the titanium version of Epix 2 with North America topo map loaded by default. At this time the watch still showed options to download other region topo maps from the built-in map manager.
Today, I connected it to Garmin Express but after sync, these options disappeared. So I disconnected Garmin Express and tried the built-in map manager again. It managed to connect to Wifi and proceeded to "Requesting Map Update Data" but it just vibrated and went back to previous screen that listed North America Topo Map and the + Add Map option.
I have both, in part because I had the 100k first. But I often use the 100k because it has much better trail information. The trails on the 24k are pretty much nonexistent in the areas where I have planned hikes.
Erickson : thanks for the info regarding trail info on the 24k maps. This seems consistent with Garmin's marketing strategy of never having one product that has all the features of its "lesser" products.
The difference between the two is display. The 24K will have TOPO lines every 40 feet in elevation change while the 100K has them every 160 feet. This can lead to you not being able to detect sharp elevation changes as well.
