Dear all
It is quite right that the Motor Reports can be standardized. I remember G.I.C. devised a format for Motor Reports in early 1980s, which was adopted by all the surveyors. In the last three decades we have seen many evolutionary changes in this format. The surveyors, in accordance to the demands of the local insurance offices, changed &/or re-arranged a few columns to suit their needs. BUT as a whole the main columns are more or less the same.
Now the things have changed a lot. In 1980s Xerox copies of the documents of the vehicle were not attached with the reports. Only the particulars were incorporated in the reports which were accepted by the insurers as correct. Nowadays Xerox copies of all the documents are enclosed with the survey report. The same particulars are also mentioned in Claim Forms (devised in the times of baba adam). Once again these are being mentioned in the survey reports. So in my opinion these repetitions should be avoided in the present times. This can be done in two ways.
One is to revise the Claim Forms and make them shortest possible, say one page simple questions and answers without going in detailed particulars. In some of the Claim Hubs short forms are being used, but most others are using the old lengthy full of useless questions (which do not have any bearing on the risks). Second alternative is the survey reports should not show FULL detail of the Insurance, R.C., Route Permit, Fitness, Driving License etc since Xerox copies duly attested are attached to the reports. Cause of accident column has been filled by the insured. Why it is being reproduced in the survey report? If there is any typographical mistake in the survey report, the crazy Officers of the Underwriters shall call the surveyor to make an amendment in their report and initial it. They do not have the guts to treat the claim form as correct and authentic.
Most of the people do not want to change – the ONLY thing that is contant.

I agree with Mr dmpanditrao. The report format prior to Nationalisation was prepared for private use of insurers and the report format at that time even use to mention "PRIVATE AND CONFIDENTIAL FOR THE USE OF INSURERS". But ever since it is not so.
In regard to standardisation of report format. This can probably done in case of Motor surveyor report, but for Fire, Engineering and Misclaneouse, this may be difficult. The marine report are also possible to be standardised.

Dear all,
It is private & confidential matter between Insurer & Insured. No other party can access this without the consent of these 'Two' and hence it is a confidential document. However mentioning it expressly can be done away easily. In fact this may have been the practice and is being blindly perpetuated since the pre nationalisation era.Ever since I started my career as SLA in the year 1984 I have never used this phrase in my reports. No body, I repeat no body from any insurers has pointed out this to me and asked to use this phrase.
So I feel we are fully justified in doing away with it.
Since 'insurance policy' is contract entered in to by two parties it is confidential for them not for surveyor and other persons till both the parties allow them to access the contract any further action in connection with it.Surveyor however has to maintain the confidentiality of the matter between the two parties i.e. he should not become responcible to bring the details in public domain without express consent of both the parties of the contract.
I fully endorse reservation of C.K.BHATIA
In fact I suggest all the new entrants to learn the legal aspect of the policy terms and conditions throughly, and understand it instead of reporting the assessment in a format prepared in baba adam's time. The report should contain all the data necessary for the insurers to dispose the claim quickly. That should be acceptable to them easily.
It is my suggestion that Institute(IIISLA) can take lead to have a comman formate for reporting in software inconsultation with all Insurers or IRDA take a lead and ask the Insurers to decide on a common formate in soft ware and provide it to all members of IIISLA free along with licence. This should bring in uniformity in reporting system and then IRDA also can get feed back from the Insurers faster in a form the IRDA desires.
We may continue such interaction till all come on common platform.
Thanks w/regds

I have only one reservation in the FSR. This mentions private and confidential. Code of Conduct for surveyors demand that survey report should be transparent and made available to insured on demand. Thus such a remark of Private and confidential is not correct and it should be limited to Without prejudice only.
