Please find attached an invitation to the Preview Night of 'The Green One and the Blue One' Exhibition, a celebration of the Tees Newport Bridge and Tees Transporter Bridge.  Developed in partnership with the Tees Transporter Bridge Visitor Experience Project, supported by the National Lottery through the Heritage Lottery Fund, the Cleveland Art Society's exhibition Preview Night takes place on the 80th anniversary of the opening of the Tees Newport Bridge.

'The Green One and the Blue One' marks a landmark year for both bridges.  The Tees Newport Bridge celebrates 80 years of spanning the 'Steel River' as the main remaining landmark of Dorman Long's bridge building prowess in the region, whilst the Tees Transporter Bridge this Spring reopens with improvements including a new lift to the upper walkway of the Bridge, a refurbished gondola, renovated Visitor Centre and new Winding House Viewing Area.

The Preview Night takes place in the prestigious historic setting of the The Heritage Gallery at Cargo Fleet from 5:30-7:30pm on Friday 28th February 2014, with the exhibition then running from Monday 3rd March to Friday 11th April (9-5pm Mon-Fri).

Please extend this invitation to anyone within your organisation who may wish to attend.  I also attach an exhibition poster which I would be grateful if you would display and circulate amongst your networks.  Please RSVP to The Heritage Gallery's Jodie Brewer-Wright at jo...@heritagegallery.co.uk.  For more information on the Tees Transporter Bridge Visitor Experience Project please visit wwww.teestransporterbridge.com or contact Tosh Warwick at tosh_w...@middlesbrough.gov.uk.

Speaker: Michael Coulson, BAM Nuttall Ltd

Middlesbrough College Bloodhound SSC Land Speed Record Car Event

From Monday 24th March through to Friday 4th April, Middlesbrough College will be hosting the Bloodhound SSC Land speed record car. This is a very exciting project to be involved with, and we’re thrilled to be hosting the team here at the College. As well as a full scale interactive replica of the record breaking car, we will be hosting workshops by the Bloodhound team for visiting schools. These will concentrate on the science and engineering is going into the project as a whole, including looking at the car itself, the desert living conditions in the Hakskeen Pan in South Africa, the computer science involved in the car and the manufacturing of the parts. We are looking for a range of volunteers to come in and help us run workshops for visiting schools and would like to invite anyone studying science, technology, engineering or mathematics subjects at University, or anyone working in one of these fields to come on board. We will be providing full training for any volunteers, in return for helping on one or more days the car is here. You will not be required to lead any workshops; you will be supporting the Bloodhound team with their delivery. You do not need to be a specialist in mechanical engineering to volunteer for this, anyone with an interest in STEM subjects

Training takes place for one day on the 19th, 20th and 21st March at Middlesbrough College and is free of charge. I’ve attached more information about the training and the Bloodhound visit, and please get in touch with me if you are interested in helping out. In addition to the two week period the car is based here, we will have access to kits and resources after this time, which you would be welcome to borrow to deliver activities yourself in the future.

Please feel free to get in touch if you have any questions about this opportunity.

Kind regards,

Helen

Balancing the energy mix

The North East as a region has a wealth of energy sources, a strong supply chain network and the expertise to be able to harness and export these resources. The question is, how as a region will we utilise the opportunities available and secure a more balanced energy future?

Chris Huhne, former Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change, will join a panel of acknowledged regional industry experts including, Neil Etherington, Able UK, Jim Cardwell, Northern Powergrid and James Ramsbotham, North East Chamber of Commerce to discuss the key issues facing the North East:

Energy 12

How will we balance the energy resources available?

Energy 12

Is shale gas viable and what are the opportunities?

Energy 12

What are the issues facing the import of energy in light of international developments?

Energy 12

With the strength of expertise in the region across the energy mix, how do we make the most of export potential?

Subject: - Living off beaches: A 1950’s view of beach-sand mineral industry in West Africa and South India

Venue: - St. Mary’s Centre, Corporation Road, Middlesbrough

Speaker: - Jake Almond

From c. 1910, near the southern tip of India selected beach sands attracted commercial attention. During the 1930s fresh economic opportunities led to wider activities both on Kerala beaches and in other parts of the world. By the 1960s Australia was the major world player and the focus of demand from chemical and metallurgical industries had changed.

The illustrated talk aims to present impressions of activities at two contrasting beach sand operations, in the Gambia and in Kerala, and to illustrate some of the associated end uses.

Hartlepool power station is on Tees Road, Hartlepool, TS25 2BZ.  The easiest way to get there is to either cross the Tees, by the A19 flyover or the Newport bridge, and take the A1046 to Haverton Hill, and turn left onto the A178 just before the Transporter Bridge.  OR to cross the Tees via the Transporter Bridge and turn right very soon onto the A178.  Follow this road past RSPB Salthome, going straight on at an island, until you see the power station on your right, and it is signed at an island, where you turn right.  Follow signs for the Visitor Centre, and park in the car park just beyond it.

Speaker: - Mark Sissons

Where traffic volumes were felt to justify it, the North Eastern Railway and its successors would provide a private siding, on agreed financial terms, to give direct rail access to the premises of a business.

This talk looks at the locations between Rillington Junction and Whitby that had private railway sidings. Even in what appears to be a very rural area there were nearly 40 private sidings installed in the life of the railway between 1836 and 1965.
