Dear Members and Friends,

A reminder that the Heritage Conversazione is on Tuesday September 23rd, at the Wilton Centre, see poster attached.  There is no charge for registration so if you can let me know if you wish to come that would be appreciated.  I will be away without access to e-mail from 6-14th September inclusive, but will pick up any registrations during that time on my return.

Peter Scholes

I am sorry to have to inform members that Peter Scholes passed away at the age of 86 on Saturday 9th August at James Cook University Hospital after deteriorating health over the last few months.  He was a member of the CIE, and keen supporter of the CIE Archives Project, having done much work with Don Spenceley, Roy Widdowson, and Frank Fitzgerald at the Teesside Archives.  His most recent achievement was the publication of a book about Dr J E Stead, CIE President in 1894, published by the Cleveland Industrial Archaeology Society.  Peter started his career in Sheffield, and in 1953 worked for BISRA (British Iron and Steel Research Association), moving to Teesside in 1978.  Since his retirement, he has worked as a freelance commissioning and technical editor, and has written extensively on analytical chemistry.  Don Spenceley will be writing a formal tribute for the CIE website in due course.  Peter's funeral will be at 2:40pm on Wednesday 27th August at St Bede's Chapel, Teesside Crematorium.  Refreshments after the funeral will be at Guisbrough Cricket Club.

CIE Archives Project

Teesside Archives have kindly offered to digitise the CIE Minute books for us, using volunteers, free of charge.  The intention is to place these on the CIE website.  If anyone would like to volunteer to become part of the team doing this, please let me know, and I will put you in touch with the manager at Teesside Archives, who is co-ordinating the project.  As regards the Published Proceedings of meetings and papers presented there, we are in negotiation with Microform Imaging Ltd of Wakefield, who specialise in digitising antique books and documents, to set up a deal to put our archives on their British Online Archives website to be available to the public on a pay to use basis.  Use by CIE members would be free.  Details have yet to be finalised, but the deal looks promising at the moment.  We are seeking funding to conserve the books themselves, and have a promise of a generous contribution from the Cleveland Scientific Institution.

CIE Website

The CIE will shortly be moving its website to a microsite of the Institution of Materials Minerals and Mining (IoM3).  This will move us to a much more user friendly platform that will make putting information on the website much easier, and there will be no charges to use this.  Security and software management will be the responsibility of the IoM3.  Content will be the responsibility of the CIE.  We hope to start migrating information over to the new site in September, and it should allow us to put much more information on the site.  There will be a new look to the site, but we will still maintain our domain name www.cieng.org  which will direct users to the new site.  There will also be access from the main IoM3 site.

AGM and Presidential Address

The AGM and Presidential Address will be at 6pm (coffee/tea from 5:30) on Tuesday 7th October, in the Centuria Building as usual.  The incoming President Vince Ludlow, will speak on "From Hedgerow to carrot fibre: Socio-economic history of angling in the UK viewed through the development of today’s fishing rods".

Hope to see you at an event soon.

Regards            Sue
