Dear Members and Friends,

We are planning a summer social event on Saturday September 7th, and the purpose if this newsletter is to give you advanced warning to put the date in your diaries.  If you are interested in this visit, please let me know so that we can assess interest.  Caroline Robson is kindly organizing this event.

Visit to Grosmont, NYMR and mining heritage walk.

Provisional timetable:

Transport options
Northern Rail train departs Middlesbrough 10:38hrs Arrives Grosmont 11:44hrs at own cost.

There are plenty of tea rooms in Grosmont for those wishing to have lunch before the walk.

Take the 13:30hrs train to Goathland. Fares are tbc but approximately £6 single. (limited seating as this is the dining train - if we have numbers I could try to reserve seats)

Walk back to Grosmont on the Rail Trail with two local guides with stops to view ironstone and whinstone mining archaeology.

Our first technical event of the season will be the AGM and Presidential Lecture on Tuesday 1st October.  More details to follow nearer the event.

We are currently inviting nominations for the Council for 2013-14.  If you would like to nominate anyone, or even yourself, please let me know, and I will pass on your nomination to the Secretary.  If you would like to know more about the Council, please ask!

We are also looking for volunteers for the 2014-15 Programme Committee.  This is a small group (5 or 6) who meet monthly to organize the next season of lectures and events.  If you want an introduction to the workings of the CIE, this is a good place to start!  Please let me know if you are likely to be interested.  If you don’t want to be part of a formal committee, but would just like to help out now and then, please let me know.  We are always looking out for keen volunteers for humble tasks like setting up the display boards at meetings, or acting as a "greeter" and directing people towards coffee, or shepherding them into the lecture at 6pm!

Monday

9th Sept.

2013

7:30pm

Subject : - The Palliser Works, Hartlepool

Venue: - St. Mary’s Centre, Corporation Road, Middlesbrough

Speaker: - Robert Dunn & John Smailes

Prior to 1938 the UK steel industry relied upon imported foreign natural magnesite to provide high quality refractory products. Steetley developed an innovative process to manufacture a synthetic magnesite from local dolomite and sea water which enabled the UK to become virtually independent of imported materials. From its somewhat humble beginnings of 10,000 tons per year the plant at Hartlepool expanded to an annual capacity of 250,000 tpy. Seventy years of history will be covered using PowerPoint slides, old photographs and rarely seen film footage of the plant in operation.
