Subject: [the-csi] Engineering Education Scheme

Dear CSI Members

I have had a request from the Engineering Education Scheme for volunteers to be assessors for the Engineering Education Scheme Celebration and Assessment Day at Newcastle University.

Full details are below – please could you share this request with members of your Institutions in the hope of finding more volunteers and reply directly to  Lisa Mather at l.ma...@etrust.org.uk or alternatively call 0161 278 2497

Having previously been a volunteer assessor on a couple of occasions I can honestly say it is a worthwhile investment of your time to see the young people who will hopefully be the next generation scientists and engineers in action.

North East Celebration and Assessment Day 2013 - Friday 19th April 2013, from 9.00am to 4.00pm at Newcastle University

For over 20 years, The Engineering Education Scheme, part of the EDT has been encouraging bright students to gain experience of problem solving within an engineering and scientific project framework.  During their involvement which is an extra curriculum activity, they acquire skills that are invaluable to them as future undergraduates and employees.

Each of the 28 North East teams, each comprising of 4 lower sixth (Year 12) students, a teacher and a company engineer will present their projects at the Celebration and Assessment Day. The day showcases the skills that they have used in finding solutions to their “problem” set by the supporting company, over the previous six-months.

We ask the Panels of Assessors to read through typically four/five written reports before the event and mark them against preset criteria. You will be sent a link to access these on line, however if you would prefer hard copies please let me know and I will arrange for the teams to provide these.  As an Assessor, we would ask that you attend from 9.00am, assess a maximum of four/five projects along with a panel of Assessors.  We expect to finish the formal assessment process at 2.30pm, although you are very welcome to stay on for the presentations. From 2.00pm, the CAD is open to invited guests who view the student teams at their stands, there will be a guest speaker and then we celebrate their successes with formal presentations of Certificates for all involved.

I would be delighted if you felt able to act as an assessor on the panel, and look forward to your reply.  It is usually great fun and not too onerous a task at all.  We provide refreshments and try to look after our assessors at the event!

Please email your response to l.ma...@etrust.org.uk or alternatively call 0161 278 2497.

Should you have any questions or need clarification please do not hesitate to contact me.

Kind Regards

Lisa Mather
