The new Web-based InstallShield community forum is now here! You can find it
at http://community.installshield.com. All of the information located in
these newsgroups has been archived and will be moved over to the new on-line
InstallShield community by Monday, December 10th. These will be completely
searchable.

Some of the new features for this online community include:

-Email notification when your post has been responded to

-Ability to subscribe to threads and receive email notification when posts
are made to it

-Superior Boolean searching capability- where you can search by Keyword,
user name, and dates in particular forums

-The ability to communicate with your peers and InstallShield experts
regarding the usage of InstallShield products

-You can create your own buddy lists and you are able to see when any of
your buddies are online

-Your have the option of displaying your email address. You can still send
emails to anyone who posts through the application using private messaging
functionality

-And much more!

Please keep in mind that the InstallShield Community is a user-supported
channel that allows InstallShield's user community to exchange tips, code,
solutions, and techniques. This online community allows for free
contribution of content, and we encourage members of these forums to assist
each other with technical questions.

Since InstallShield does not guarantee responses to community postings, we
do not recommend that you request technical support through this channel.
For technical support issues, please contact InstallShield technical support

I feel this is an unfortunate development but this is how companies are
moving things these days. Online forums are generally not as useful as
usenet. The user interface of a newsreader is efficient and fast. I say you
leverage it and everybody wins. And you can search using google. Using a
company forum application also removes the anonymity of posts as well, in
case you should have an unkind word for a product. Oh well, nothing will
reverse the onslaught of mediocrity in my opinion. This has also just
happened with the Rogue Wave newsgroups for the Stingray VC++ products. They
moved to a completely cramped, empty and slow forum system, and in the
process blew away thousands of archived usenet messages for developers. The
same may happen with the installshield usenet messages. Companies do these
things for obvious reasons, but they are not run by and for developers imho.

Am I totally misinformed here, I got the impression from the initial post
that the usenet nntp news and the web board would be sharing the same post
information? No wonder the amount of news seems small lately. :)

If that is _not_ the case then this is really a very bad move. Am I now
expected to read two different boards (nntp and the web) with different
information on them? It would be better then to remove the nntp board
altogether to avoid this.

As Paul mentioned the best reason to use a nntp newsreader is the share
speed of it. Even with the trusty Outlook Express I can very quickly just
browse thru hundreds of articles in a couple of minutes. The web board
stalls me for about 5-15 seconds every time I want to change to a different
article. Very very slow if you read the news only a few times a month. With
nntp you just download all articles once all is stored locally in a very
fast browsing environment.

I agree with you, guys : if InstallShield stops the nntp service,
i won't have a look on it each day !
I'll only go on the web board if i have a big problem,
but never by curiousness : surfing is a waste of time !
=> no more help from nobody, nowhere !

I hope IS will let the nntp alive !
bye,

I think the NNTP servers should be preffered if it's the case to use it
effectively,
the web IS hard to browse, and hard to use.

As a customer, I want to use the nntp news server, not the web based board.

And I think the new Knowledge Management Strategy of InstallShield has moved
to a weaker point.

Some people find the web interface easier to use. Some companies don't
allow NNTP access (hard to believe but true). So there are some points
for web, but also you have very valid points for NNTP.
I'm not speaking for InstallShield, but from my understanding the NNTP
and web groups will exist side by side (at least for some time). Web
postings won't show up in nntp, but nntp postings are being converted
and archived in the web interface (from time to time).
