Detecting if Direct X 8.0 or greater exists on the machine.

I am creating my first install that needs Direct X 8.0 and I would like to
check to see if it exists before enabling the Direct X object component.

Is there an easy method to detect it and also does the Direct X 8.0a object
prompt for a reboot or is that left to the installer??
