Dynamic file location IDE vs. Command line

I have updated the file groups in an IS project from static to dynamic.
This takes care of not having to enumerate the files, but now I want the
source dir to be dynamic. I set a standard variable in Build Settings
and had each file group reference that variable. This worked find.

Next, I wanted to automate our build using the command line tools
Compile and ISBuild. Unfortunately, I see no way to set my standard
variable except through the IDE.

This has led me to try an environment variable which I can set in my
batch script prior to calling ISBuild. That will be great, but leaves
me in a jam when working directly in the IDE.

Am I making this too hard. I figure this is the place to get some
expert IS advice.
