This auto-repair feature of Microsoft's Installer, which automatically
replaces any deleted files that were installed when the application was
originally installed, is TERRIBLE! It is causing us so many problems when
we deploy updates to the original install of our program. Is there any way
to turn it off in my ISX 3.51 project? I'm desperate for a solution to this
problem.

Alternatively, is there a reg entry that can be made to turn it off for a
specific install?

Many thanks,
Heather

The only way I've been able to work around this "feature" is to use the
"Clear Key File" command from the pulldown menu under "Specify Application
Data/Files". You have to do this individually for each file that you want
to disable autoupdate on.

Or open the built msi package in ORCA. Go to the Component Table. Delete all
entries in the "KeyPath" table (if you are distributing any DSN's, do not
delete these). It's the same as using "Clear Key File", but you don;'t have
to go through each and every file and right click on it.

I have done exactly this by right clicking on every file in the [INSTALLDIR]
on the Files section of ISX3.51, and it has had no effect. If any of the
.exe files in my application's folder in Program Files are deleted, the next
time the icon, created by my ISX installer, is clicked, Microsoft Installer
is kicked off and replaces the deleted file. Is this a bug in ISX? Seems
to me it is. Unless I am not understanding what Clear Key File means.

Thanks,
Heather

Actually this is a bug in ISX. It is not supposed to have a"clear key files"
option. So clicking the options won't really set or clear key files. There
is something you can try though. I think if you remove the shortcut from the
setup, and create your own shortcut on the target machine's desktop, Windows
Installer shouldn't get kicked off. I think our shortcuts are by default
"Advertised" shortcuts. These in turn when selected, run the Windows
Installer service for Repair and advertised installs.
