problem deploying image

Hello,

I'm trying to deploy an image with the instadmg code I downloaded yesterday (459 I think).

The steps I'm using to deploy the image:

1- boot an install usb stick
2- go to disk utility
3- go to the restore tab
4- put the local disk as the destination
5- put a web address of the image for the source
6- hit the restore button

I get the following message now: "An error (22) occurred while copying. (Invalid argument)"

Could this be related to the fact that instadmg is now building in the restore partition into the image?

Due to our network structure, I need to be able to deploy this way.  Images made with older versions of instadmg all worked fine using the above method.  Of course I had to use alternate methods to create the restore partition once the image was installed.

Any ideas?

Maybe have a switch that determines whether or not to include the restore partition in the image?

What OS is the install USB stick running? If it's an earlier version of Lion (10.7.0 or 10.7.1), I recommend updating it so that you're running the latest version of ASR. 

ASR is what Disk Utility is using under the hood to restore the disk images.

Hey Roy,

I noticed this as well. Disk Utility doesn't understand that you're trying to restore a disk image with two partitions, I noticed this myself. Mount the dmg and choose the contained Macintosh HD as the source and it worked fine in my testing.

Hello Rich,

I've got a 10.8.2 image on the usb stick that I got from the apple store - for now I need to restore a specially made lion image (created with instadmg) with specific homegrown and enterprise packages, and using a modified CreateLionUser package for our environment, doing ldap lookups, etc.

I don't have control of our routers.  Our routers block DHCP  & PXE.  I can't change that.  As far as I can tell that's required for deploystudio if going across subnets.

That's why I need to use diskutility with the web image.  I'm happy to go back and look at deploystudio if I'm incorrect.

You can run DeployStudio from the USB stick (or any external drive), but there's no real reason why what you are trying to do shouldn't work. I'd try Allister's suggestion first.

I could go ahead and modify the instadmg code to fit my needs, however I'd prefer to stick with what's released by the experts :)

Any chance of getting a switch that would skip creating the restore partition?

I'll have to think about it - we have techs all over a 43 square mile site that are all pulled in 20 different directions -- not all of them spend 100% on Macs and have varying degrees of expertise.  I'm not sure it would be easier to get them all trained up to use deploystudio rather than the factory install image with disk utility.

Given that, what's your opinion?

Just to mention another option, if the problem you have is that the bootpe request does not pass through the routers but you can ping your servers, you could probably bless the computers to point to the IP of your netboot server and then do a netrestore or DeployStudio.
