In my opinion, "This Modern Love" is the best Bloc Party song and one of the greatest love songs of the 21st century. Is the second half of that statement a bold claim? Absolutely. Do I stand behind it? One hundred per cent. It can't be a track list coincidence that "This Modern Love" falls exactly halfway through the group's 2005 debut Silent Alarm - it's the heart of the album and Kele Okereke wearing his heart on his sleeves. There are plenty of catchier, more immediate songs on the record, but "This Modern Love" is the centrepiece and the album's warmth.
The song begins slowly, with the frontman practically whispering the lyrics, and a simple guitar line. It builds gradually as the rhythm section enters the mix, Matt Tong's drums serving as an anchor for Okereke's drifting lyrics. At first it feels like the singer is having a one-sided conversation with himself, apologizing for his absent-mindedness and awkwardness to an individual that he only refers to as "baby". When the backup vocals come in midway through the song, it feels more like a phone conversation between two people, both sharing their feelings and frustrations. The listener can tell that they both care about each other, but "This Modern Love" is about how difficult it can be to voice that affection.
There are other Bloc Party songs that deal specifically with more primitive carnal urges, but when Okereke asks "Do you want to come over and kill some time? in the song's penultimate line, it's clear he's not looking for sex, but companionship. He knows that being in a relationship can be simultaneously beautiful and completely terrifying. He knows that sometimes there will be occasional communication breakdowns, whether they be by technology or human error, and other times when silence speaks louder than words.
