Jesus is the way the truth and the life.
When I started this walk with Alex I was petrified, I rebelled thought
this makes no sense, but if I could have it over again, I would do it
again. I met God in a man called Alex.
I want to share scripture to you, for three reasons, firstly all of
scripture points to Jesus our savior and secondly Jesus displays how
perfect and complete and lacking in nothing we are and thirdly because
I find Alex in these scriptures alive and well in an eternal embrace.
You see James, Alex was my Kilimanjaro and it took me three years of
struggle and many a storm to finally summit, and this was not by
anything other than Gods grace. My joy is the knowing that Alex is
completely accepted in the beloved for all eternity, not by personal
achievements but by believing in the one who achieved on our behalf.
What is the heart other than what one believes?
For those of you who did not know, Alex was on a mission to go behind
enemy lines in the second world war, this was pretty much a suicide
move were they had to board glider planes and emergency land in a
field or road, if you survived the landing you then had to fight your
way out of enemy territory. The day before the mission, when all hope
was gone the declaration of peace was made.
The scriptures says
1 “Comfort, comfort my people,”
says your God.
2 “Speak tenderly to Jerusalem.
Tell them that there warfare has ended
and their sins are pardoned,
Yes, the LORD was punished twice over
for all our sins.”
Wow here were celebrations, Alex told me that more people got injured
in the celebrations than in fighting. People jumping of airoplane
hangers. A greater joy than winning a world cup… Glory to God in the
highest, and on earth peace to men on whom his favor rests.
Alex had great loyalty, he went to gym four times a week( he was not
very loyal to his homework, but considering that some Wednesdays he
also got Felecia in to make him laugh at the way she spoke of his
buttox I forgive him this), he went shopping, he went to Bill’s
nursery, went to Billy Bosch for a gin and tonic, to buy flowers at
the lagoon, he went to the fish shop every Friday, he served on the
rates payers association and got me signed up. Alex was loyal to sky
news, and cricket and in phoning Phil when Phil was obviously down
after the Australians lost, I think Alex would have used any excuse to
speak to His Jackie. Loyal in going to the deli, no matter that he
could not drink his cappuccino without 20 serviettes and often was
stared at by people, he knew who he was, he was loyalty personified.
Alex enjoyed to laugh, and he always laughed with people, and he
laughed best when he laughed from the heart. His ability to create
something to laugh at was pure mastery and this helped him to look
away from his discomforts and his laughter was comfort to those who
felt uncomfortable for him.
8For My thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways My ways,
says the Lord.
9For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways
higher than your ways and My thoughts than your thoughts.
10For as the rain and snow come down from the heavens, and return
not there again, but water the earth and make it bring forth and
sprout, that it may give seed to the sower and bread to the eater,(A)
11So shall My word be that goes forth out of My mouth: it shall
not return to Me void but it shall accomplish that which I please and
purpose, and it shall prosper in the thing for which I sent it.
12For you shall go out with joy and be led forth with peace; the
mountains and the hills shall break forth before you into singing, and
all the trees of the field shall clap their hands.
13Instead of the thorn shall come up the cypress tree, and instead
of the brier shall come up the myrtle tree; and it shall be to the
Lord for a name of renown, for an everlasting sign and memorial that
shall not be cut off.
Alex Bury was no spectator, he participated in life, a severe stroke
could not stop him, Alex has received his crown and is part of the
cloud of witnesses, his body might have ended, but his Spirit and soul
live on.
I want to thank God for you Alex, he knows I needed you in a time such as this.
