Library costs for ebooks and digital audiobooks vary widely by publisher. Some offer standard retail pricing to libraries. In those cases, a book that a retail consumer could purchase at $14.99 is also offered to libraries at those terms. Many publishers, though, charge libraries substantially more than retail price. And others do not sell, but instead license the books to libraries with restrictions, such as a max number of checkouts, a time limit, or some combination of both.

High costs combined with titles that have licenses expire put the library in a double bind. While trying to meet demand by buying multiple copies of new material, other still popular older titles expire, and the library must buy another license to keep providing it.

Compare this to the physical book, which the library can often buy at discount from book suppliers and circulate until the condition deteriorates. The library can then buy additional books if needed. Physical books can often circulate 50 or more times for years before needing replacement. The same goes for physical CD audiobooks.

Increased use of OverDrive and the resulting need to buy more copies will continue to drive up costs for digital materials. Use of the OverDrive collection skyrocketed in 2020 and has increased each year since. If use holds, TRL will reach a 2 million check out milestone this year.

There are many ebooks available on Amazon or other platforms that are not made available to the library market. If an author has signed an exclusive agreement to Amazon that means their titles are only sold on that platform.

2. Ebooks and related tech should be truly interoperable in bookstores above a certain size. That means the required use of ePub and open PDF as at least options for consumers. Stores could still use proprietary formats and keep them around for owners of older devices.

3. In a related vein: E Ink devices and other book-dedicated hardware should at least be able to read ePub, a well-established industry standard. Granted, Amazon says it will let consumers send in ePub for conversion to a Kindle format. Not good enough!

4. DRM if used should be nonproprietary, and ideally stores instead can be encouraged to use something more consumer-friendly like watermarking. Maybe regulators could restrict DRM in larger stores to a certain percentage of titles. I want to be able to use Moon+ Reader Pro on the usual bestsellers, which watermarking would allow.

Note: Yes, libraries are suffering in another way, through all the mergers that have taken place. Big publishers are charging libraries too much for ebooks or, in some cases, not making them available to libraries at all.

Otherwise, the big e-book stores dominate the market much less than they want you to believe. I just heard from another writer who got a vast majority of preorders for their latest book from places other than Amazon. But maybe we could force the latter not to require price-matching for books also sold elsewhere, and generally to stop telling authors for how much to sell their books. Stuff like that.

4. Perhaps over in Romania and the rest of Europe, people have a different perspective, especially with ePub being far more of a standard there than the Kindle formats are. But with self-published writers in the states, Amazon remains the main show.

With the soft launch doing about as much as could be expected (not that much), I turn to other methods to try to increase sales. Both Ben and Kerry suggest I recruit the help of influencers or celebrities to promote the book, which would be great advice if I knew any. Instead, I write a blog post for money website The Escape Artist.

Ben says his biggest marketing method is paid Facebook and Amazon advertising. While he admits he has at times lost money on particular pay-per-click adverts, because he has such a big collection of books these losses are outnumbered by his customers bouncing from one book to another. I consider dropping some cash on adverts, but I find various forum posts from authors who have paid for adverts, only to generate a few extra sales and ultimately lose money.

Ebook projects like Project Gutenberg transcribe ebooks and make them available for the widest number of reading devices. Standard Ebooks takes ebooks from sources like Project Gutenberg, formats and typesets them using a carefully designed and professional-grade style manual, fully proofreads and corrects them, and then builds them to create a new edition that takes advantage of state-of-the-art ereader and browser technology.

Transcriptions from other sources are often filled with typos or suffer from issues like inconsistent spelling, missing accent marks, or missing punctuation. Submitting corrections to such sources can be difficult or impossible, so errors are rarely fixed.

At Standard Ebooks, we do a careful and complete readthrough of each ebook before releasing it, checking it against a scan of the original pages to fix as many typos as possible. Even if we do miss something, our ebooks are stored in the hugely popular Git source control system, allowing anyone to easily submit a correction.

Our ebooks include complete, well-researched, and consistent metadata, including original, detailed book blurbs and links to encyclopedia sources. Perfect for machine processing or for extra-curious, technically-minded readers.

NOTICE - Each eBook is a "Guide" to assist with specific techniques and details as they describe. Due to the Genesis Heat Set paints being discontinued, the step by step instructions following the colors in the eBooks will need to be adjusted using BC Heat Set Paint colors and/or Ultimate Fusion Air Dry colors. All color names will not be an exact match. Also, any Video or DVD links within the eBook may be inactive.

Fourth, to be absolutely clear, la carte sales of self-published books are a totally separate accounting matter, and one where the true numbers are known only to Amazon, but which the Kindle Unlimited numbers we see here indicate must surely be another colossal sum of ebook revenue the AAP does not (because it cannot) count.

Sixth, we should understand that mainstream publishers putting titles into Kindle Unlimited will be getting paid on separately agreed terms, quite distinct from the Global Fund. Likewise the actual royalties paid to APub authors with books in KU are quite separate from the Global Fund pot. So when we talk about $450 million being doled out to indie authors with their books in kindle Unlimited we are talking just a fraction of the total sum being paid out to publishers (including APub) for ebooks downloaded through Kindle Unlimited.

Finally in our long list of clarifications we should be absolutely clear that the publishing numbers we are told about by the various publishers associations and the stats counters like Nielsen and Bowker (indies publishing ebooks on Amazon do not need ISBNs) DO NOT track these indie sales in their count.

By comparison that $450 million Amazon paid out to self-published authors via Kindle Unlimited will be almost all trade, and we can add to that that almost all APub ebooks in Kindle Unlimited or sold la carte, and almost all self-published ebooks sold la carte on Amazon or elsewhere will be trade.

Yet this sum of substantially over a half billion dollars when we include la carte indie sales is, for all practical purposes, ebook volume and revenue that is quite invisible. And by choice, it sometimes feels, when we see talk (from those who should and probably do know better) of how ebook sales have stalled or are in steep decline.

Okay, so ebooks are not in decline after all. Rather consumption patterns are shifting in ways some publishing parties would prefer not to acknowledge, and far from declining, ebook consumption continues to rise.

And as per past discussion here at TNPS we need to seriously entertain the possibility that the so-called fall in ebook sales that everyone delights in reporting might well be in part to readers deserting mainstream la carte platforms in favour of streaming platforms like, but not limited to, Kindle Unlimited.
