Iptables query

Hi All , 

if anyone of you worked on IPTABLES , please let me know :

1> how "state" option is used in the iptables rules like NEW , ESTABLISHED AND 
    RELATED ?

I am seeing couple of threads on internet but not getting exact answer .

Can somebody please give simple example and explain or give any link?
