But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. We might sense a coldnessin the term as used in our culture, but in Jesus' culture, it was perfectlyproper for a man to address a woman this way -- but still strange for a son to amother.21The reason for this more formal address is probably that Jesus intends hiswords to be understood as a formal testamentary disposition under Jewish familylaw.22

Although a variety of motivations for the composition of John's Gospel have been posited by interpreters (such as to supplement the other Gospels, to combat some form of heresy, to oppose the continuing followers of John the Baptist), the author himself states his main purpose clearly in 20:31: "that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name."
