Garv: Pride & Honour is a 2004 Indian Hindi-language action drama film directed by Puneet Issar. The film stars Salman Khan, Shilpa Shetty, Arbaaz Khan and Amrish Puri. This film was Puneet Issar' s directional debut, dealing with Mumbai Underworld and politics in Maharashtra. The film was initially titled Sanghar.[2]
The film starts with court blaming Arjun for 18 killings at CM's Farmhouse. During 1984 riots, Arjun's parents were killed and then Shakuntla Devi decided to adopt him. Samar wants to reduce the amount of crime in the state. The trio faces obstacles because the powerful and corrupt politicians including Kashinath Trivedi, Badrinath Trivedi and Yashwant Deshpanday are connected with underworld don Zafar Supari. The politicians decide to transfer Samar Singh while Arjun and Hyder kill Yeda (Zafar Supari's henchman) after they get into Arjun's house to warn Arjun's mother and sister by convincing Arjun to get not involved in Zafar Supari's criminal activities. Deshpande asks Kashinath Trivedi (Now Chief Minister of Maharashtra) to collect the file from Arjun he has made to prove that all of the corrupt politicians are involved with Zafar Supari. The next day, Arjun comes with the file and Kashi burns it, surprisingly Arjun tells him that one copy has been sent to Central Home Ministry, second copy to President's office and third copy has already been sent to the Prime Minister's Office. Furious Zafar lands in Mumbai, with trapping Hyder and his colleagues in Old Jassai Railway Yard. He brings RDX with Hyder successfully destroying it, but is killed by Zafar. While burying Hyder outside a mosque, Arjun receives a phone call from Zafar, unaware what he talked about. The present day starts at the court when Lawyer Tyagi blames that Arjun's sister Rakhi (Akanksha Malhotra) was not at home on 1 November and was making merry with all corrupt politicians and their men at CM's Farmhouse. He further says that she even had illegitimate relations with her brother Arjun. Samar then decides to introduce Rakhi tomorrow in Court, but gets to know that Arjun's killings have had a deep, mental effect on Rakhi and that she is currently being treated at Saint Mary's sanitarium. He goes there and Rakhi tells him the truth of what happened on 1 November. In the court. at first Samar is reluctant to tell the truth, but surprisingly Rakhi herself comes and tells the truth. She tells that on the night of 1 November, she was kidnapped and gang-raped by them. The court later finds politicians wrong and release Arjun and he joins back his duty as an honest police officer.
Sunny Deol was the initial choice for the role of ACP Arjun Ranawat and Sanjay Dutt was considered for the role of ACP Hyder Ali Khan, but they were replaced by Salman Khan and Arbaaz Khan The film was initially titled Sanghar, but was later changed to Garv: Pride & Honour.
Sukanya Verma of Rediff wrote "There is nothing exceptional about Garv in terms of story or execution. You know exactly what to expect. It's a beaten-to-death plot about a righteous cop and his Satyamev Vijayate [Truth will triumph] stance. Like most do-gooder cops, here too the hero falls in love with a bar dancer (Shilpa Shetty in a role as skimpy as her wardrobe)."[7] Manish Gajjar of BBC.com wrote "Technically Garv excels in various departments, whether it is the dialogues or the musical score. Both add impact to the scenes. I have said this before and I will say it again. Be warned about the blood and gore. Garv might not appeal to those who are used to seeing family orientated flicks. Garv is on the whole, Salman's film and he does full justice to his role. Shilpa Shetty does very well in the dance numbers whilst the rest of the cast support well.[8]
In 2015, Issar told PTI in an interview that he thinks that "Garv was ahead of its times. For Salman, the movie had set a benchmark in terms of action sequences, drama and emotion. If it would have been released today then it would have definitely done business of Rs 300 crore."[9]
If there was a checklist for Indian action films, Garv would hit all the notes. Actually, Garv would serve as the checklist! Well, except that Amrish Puri was a good guy. That was weird. And Anupum Kehr was a bad guy. Also odd. Not unheard of, just strange. And the actual bad guy was played by Mukesh Rishi, who is almost always the bad guy, but I knew him first from Run and Sarfarosh, so it is odd for me personally to see him being evil. But besides casting, this is like the typicalist-typical Hindi action film.

But Issar's career did not start off on a good note. In 1982, he made headlines when he accidentally punched reigning superstar Amitabh Bachchan during a fight sequence on the sets of Coolie. Bachchan was seriously injured and narrowly escaped death. The accident was catastrophic for Issar's film career, as he stopped getting acting offers and was often told to play a sidekick of the main villains in films.
In 1995, Issar switched to directing successful television serials like Jai Mata Di and Hindustani. Now, he is making the transition to the big screen. His first feature film, Garv: Pride And Honour, stars Salman Khan, Arbaaz Khan and Shilpa Shetty.
When I wrote the story, I could only see Salman in this role. I narrated the script to him and he liked it. My hero is silent and a man of few words. He's cool, has no problems with friends, but is also very cold. He has a tremendous bardaasht karne ki taakat [tolerance level]. Salman has the same nature in real life. He has given a brilliant performance and I think he will walk away with film awards.
It is a cop film. It is a complete film, with good songs and a lot of entertainment. Garv is about a police officer, Arjun Ranawat [played by Salman Khan]. He is an upright cop. He stands up against corruption and for all the right things in life. And how he fights [the wrong things].
Selling the film with that name would have been difficult. Sanghar is close to my heart, but people asked me what it meant. I used to explain that one who gives birth is Brahma, palan poshan wala [one who nutures you] is Vishnu, and sanghar ke devta [god of destruction] is Shiva. So we named the film Garv.
He called me after eight months. He calls me 'big man'. He telephoned me and said, "Big Man, I am ready to hear your script." When he heard it, he loved it and readily agreed to do the film. He also wanted to produce the film, but I told him that it is being produced by Cinevistaas.
Yes. When we were to start shooting, Salman got into an accident [one man died and several were injured when Salman allegedly ran over them while driving his car in a drunken state. He is on bail currently].
I had a 7am shooting and I got a call from Salman asking me to cancel the shoot because he was 'in a mess'. When I met him, I learnt about the accident. I was demoralised and just missed a cardiac arrest. I had got up at 5am and wanted to go for the first shot of the film. The producers were also tense and thought the film would never get released.
Obviously. He is a friend. I have worked with him in seven-eight films like Sanam Bewafa, Suryavanshi, Jagruti, Chandra Mukhi, and others. I was told that he would have no fan following left, that the accident case had given him bad publicity. Everyone had panicked. Producers were under pressure to give up on Salman. But I refused. I was optimistic that Salman will come out of this mess.
I was a nobody and had approached Salman who was a star. He called me and said he would do the film. From a TV director, I suddenly entered the 'A' bracket of directors. And it was only because of Salman Khan.
Accidents and calamities occur, but that does not mean you give up on friends. I said I would do this film only if Salman starred in it. If I had given up on him, there would have been no one more naashukra [ungrateful] than me. At the end of the day, I am also thankful to my producers who stood by me.
