Finally, something Gerald Genta didn't design. As it turns out, when you're a guy as prolific as Genta, who pumped out hundreds of designs for 15 francs a pop in the '50s and '60s, you get credit for even the stuff you didn't do. But Audemars Piguet is unequivocal in who designed the "Disco Volante" ref. 5093...


"Audemars Piguet sometimes also worked with independent designers, such as the German Gebhard Duve, who created the so-called 'Discovolante' 5093 models in the 1950s," it writes on its excellent AP Chronicles site. AP also provides these 1952 sketches from Duve:


Somewhere along the way, history got muddled, and now Genta often gets the credit. Even I parrotted it a few days ago on social media, so a huge thanks to Jeff Stein (more than a Heuer guy!) for alerting me to the error of my ways.


Duve sketched out the above design in the 1950s and showed it to Jacques Louis Audemars, the grandson of one of AP's founders who ran creative for the brand, and it eventually became the ref. 5093 "Disco Volante," or flying saucer in Italian. As others have nicely documented, the Disco Volante's roots are firmly Art Deco with Omega, Vacheron, and others making saucer-shaped cases, but Duve's 1950s spin refined the idea and pulled it firmly into the world of midcentury design.


The 5093 seems to have been produced in modest numbers from the '50s through the '70s. It measures 36mm and has no lugs. You can find it with any number of dial and bezel combos, in white or yellow gold or (more rare) platinum. I was able to spend some time with the yellow gold Disco Volante you see here that sold at Hindman Auctions just yesterday for $8,255.


It doesn't stop with the case shape: the strap is actually screwed and integrated right into the case, underneath the caseback. It accentuates the case's thinness and round shape. It probably makes swapping (or even finding) alternative straps a real pain in the ass, so go complain about quick-release spring bars and bracelets in an article about some fancy new watch. You'll also find some 5093s with gorgeous integrated bracelets.


Many Disco Volantes have Gubelin-signed dials for the retailer based in Lucerne, Switzerland. Beyond that, this one's a pretty simple crosshair design. It obviously has some blemishes, but that's to be expected for a '70s dress watch and pretty common for the 5093.


My favorite dial design found on the Disco Volante is the multi-tone with golden outer tracks that absolutely shimmer. While the above dial can land a little flat, these multi-tone ones are full of depth. Collector Alexandre Tritz (who also happens to make straps for Rexhepi) has one of the most gorgeous examples I've seen, and he was gracious enough to provide some photos for your enjoyment:


"The reference 5093 from Audemars Piguet is part of these watches that I love, but I can't really tell why," Tritz said when I asked him about his love for the reference. "The balance between sophistication and simplicity is right here. A great collector once told me: 'It's quite easy to make a simple watch look complicated, but it's very hard to make a complicated watch look simple.' The Disco Volante perfectly illustrates this."


Inside the Disco Volante is AP's ultra-thin caliber 2003, a manual movement measuring just 1.64mm thick. Designed in collaboration with LeCoultre and Vacheron, it was the thinnest caliber when introduced in the '40s (take that, F. Piguet 21!).


The Disco Volante at Hindman is more of an average result, but the multiple bidders do indicate strong interest for the reference. Perhaps it's part of the whole "people like smaller, dressier, design-driven watches now" that's spawned a million think pieces and even more Hodinkee Radio conversations.


The Disco Volante might even be having a bit of a moment, with Furlan Marri releasing its take on the flying saucer just last week. But I don't want to get into the meta of it all. It's just a cool shape that I find utterly fascinating.


I am trying to get a clear understanding of the memory map for this board. I want to the know the address locations of the SDRAM and both QSPI flash devices. The board user manual says SDRAM is in Bank 1, which RM0399 says is 0xC000000, but when examples show that 0xD0000000 is the location of the SDRAM. When I run a variation of an example to access the LCD 0XD000 0000 is the correct location as 0xC000 0000 hit a hardware fault.


This information is clear, but what is the actual physical memory map for the STM32H747i-Disco board itself? Is the SDRAM in Bank 1 or Bank 2? Documentation says Bank1, but it reality it is in Bank 2. And is there anything in Bank1?


We will not debate the value of quality or workflow simplicity contained in that $10,000. What we will do is demonstrate how to take a $1,000 consumer fixed-wing drone out of the box and generate high resolution orthomosaics with a simple, repeatable workflow.


Connect the Taranis receiver and GoPro. The receiver plugs in via the servo connector wire (see above image), and you'll need to dig out some foam to fit the Hero5. There is nothing to damage in this section of the plane so be careful, but don't worry about hitting anything.


If you are not seeing proper control surface response, I would start by looking at the ELEVON_OUTPUT parameter. I use setting number 2. (Here's a great video from Mark Harrison if you need elevon help! =yvlCbs1NeC4)


The AUTO takeoff and landing works very well with this configuration. Do not be afraid to try it. Landing only requires two additional waypoints. LAND at 0 altitude where you want the plane to stop, and one waypoint before it about 200m away at 30m altitude.


In summary, you don't need $10,000 to create large area, high spatial resolution maps with a fixed wing drone. A relatively small amount of money and basic maker skills can get you a cutting edge mapping platform from three boxes of consumer products.


Hello, I would like to know if instead of using a time lapse on the camera, one could trigger it via mission planner through PWM? I have a git3 which can be triggered with PWM. Also can I trigger my micasense rededge too? Thanks!

This book is especially valuable for students working on their own or in homeschooling, though also useful for school or university students. I would appricate any feed back from Disco 3 owners who have either manual or automatics - The main thing i want to find out is the MPG solo and Towing, as i'm of the thought that modern automatics are as economic as a manual driven car.


Having just test drove a Manual disco 3 and reading the lastest disco 3 thread on here i noticed a few people mentioning that the manual Disco's are prone to going through clutches - is this really the case for you disco 3 manual owners ?


If you counted the number of gear changes you perform with a manual gearbox, you would be shocked. I doubt there will really be much difference in fuel consumption between the types of gearbox. Either will give you a wallet hemorrhaging economy, but for a more relaxed drive the auto is my choice. The reality is, it is an awesome towcar, if you don't mind the 100+ fuel fill-ups. Finding independant service and repair garages will go a long way in cutting the cost of ownership, main dealer servicing at 35000 miles was 585 at my local outlet. I woulld dread to think of the cost at drive belt change time, there are 3 of them? You have read threads of the problems inherrant with the D3, so the final decision can only be yours.


Not wishing to open up reliability arguements again (please!) , mine has been 1st class throughout it's 5 years, nothing busted, never let me down etc. (fate, leave me alone!). Personally, I thoroughly recommend the car - especially for towing. Disco 3 owners have a little known affliction called a 'permasmile'. This happens every time you drive the car - you wait and see


I have a 2005 manual. If I had another, (which is a strong possibility) I would probably go for an auto. It's not that the manual is problematic, it would simply be for ease of driving. Just after I bought it (three years ago, and at 45,000 miles) it needed a new clutch/flywheel, which fortunately was paid for under warranty. The clutches CAN be a weak spot, but bear in mind that a lot depends upon what the vehicle has been used for previously. Although mine had been owned privately, had it been subject to a lot of town work, or dragging a heavy horse box, or someone resting their foot on the clutch pedal? I don't know. Any vehicle of this size could have the same issues. Nissan had lots of clutch problems with the Navara/Pathfinder, until they did away with dual-mass flywheels.
