The way I've done this is to use Input Director on both of the computers to handle the keyboard and mouse. If the monitor supports multiple inputs (VGA & DVI for example), connect each computer to a different input. You'll have to use the monitor's input switch (hopefully a button right on the front of the monitor) to toggle between the two computers.

It isn't totally automatic, but not terrible if you aren't switching back and forth too often.
