Cursor speed inconsistency

First I must say some good points about this program. I love the
program. I used Synergy a few years ago and recently I decided to give
it a try again cause I got two computers with two displays again and I
though that after all this years that Synergy would be rock solid by
now but I was wrong. It was buggy and its setup was still very poorly
done as it was the last time I tried it. I though they would have
fixed the main issues with it and made the setup easier by now but
nope.

I got Synergy to work but sometimes (here and there) I would click on
some things and it wouldn't comply as if clicked on nothing and it
behaves somewhat erratically with a few programs (again here and
there) so I found out about this other program and decided to give it
a try.

This one has way better a setup than Synergy and far more intuitive. I
didn't have to read any tutorials or anything to make it work and got
it to work correctly very quickly and I tweaked it to my taste very
quickly too. Setting the relative position of the monitors is in a
graphical way which is the way I though that it should have been in
Synergy from the get go, after all what are GUIs for? That is a no
brainer in my opinion but they missed it.

Setting this graphically instead of the mess of "this is to the left
of that or to the right of that" that Synergy has which is very
confusing and very counter intuitive and even for a text based setup
it is counter intuitive. So you have done a way better job than
Synergy in several areas so congratulations to you guys for that.

Now on to my only complain so far about the program is that when I
pass the cursor to the slave PC the cursor speed and feel is very
different from the master PC. I have a Logitech wireless Desktop
EX-100 as the master in a Vista (64 bit) Ultimate OS and a Microsoft
Intellipoint Optical mouse in my slave PC which has Win XP Pro (32
bit) OS.

When the cursor switches to the slave PC which I have to the left of
the main PC I feel a complete change in cursor speed and feel and I
tried to adjust it in the Control Panel in the Pointer Options tab. I
tried the different speeds and I tried with the Enhance pointer
precision check-box on and off but one, it stills feels different and
two, I prefer it with the Enhance pointer precision setting as on
anyway.

Nevertheless no matter which speed setting I used the cursor speed and
feel is very different from the master PC. It can be used but is
annoying to feel the cursor reaction change when I switch from one PC
to the other.

Another thing that I noticed is that if I set the pointer speed to
match as best as possible the speed and feel of the master PC the
cursor becomes way slower if I decide or I'm forced to use the other
mouse in the slave PC.

So if I have to do that and use the native mouse of the slave PC at
any moment (as when somebody else like my niece is going to use my
slave PC or when somebody like my sister is using my main PC and I
have to use the second mouse in the slave PC for myself in which case
I turn Input Director off) I have to go into the Control Panel and
accelerate the pointer speed about two notches cause the cursor is way
to slow for me in the slave PC.

I think that the cursor speed and feel should match better the speed
and feel of the master PC so one doesn't get that annoying feeling.
I'm using Intellipoint 6.3 software on the slave PC (the software for
the slave PC mouse).

In Synergy I don't get such a big difference in cursor feel when I
switch from one PC to the other. I'm not even sure what exactly is
causing the difference in cursor behavior in what I called "feel".
Maybe it has to do with cursor acceleration curves or something like
that.

Apart from that the program is way better than Synergy in my humble
opinion particularly in the setup part.

Actually after fiddling for a while I found what was causing the
problem and it was something rather simple. It was that in the slave
computer the Enhance pointer precision check-box was on but on the
computer that I was using a a main computer it was off and I prefer it
like that really and that was confusing me.

The slave computer was a recent install and I found the check-box on
in it (I don't know if I had set it to on by accident or something
because I really, really prefer it off and I was using it like that in
the main PC and when I saw it on in the slave computer I got a wee bit
confused and though that I had set it to on on purpose) but I had
forgotten to check this setting in the master (main) PC but then I
checked it and saw that I had been using it in the off position (for a
long time) and I realized then where was the mistake.

I set it to off in the slave PC too and then adjusted the cursor speed
to a slightly faster setting (in the slave also) and then the two
computers started to feel much closer in cursor behavior so that's
that. I also tested the software by playing Quake III (Hey I still
love this game after all this years, it's that good and addictive) and
even if it isn't as optimal as playing it with a native mouse it was
playable!

With Synergy I couldn't play Quake III or some other 3D games from the
master mouse cause the cursor went balistically oversensitive when I
started the game no matter how much I adjusted the cursor speed inside
the game or in Windows. Hey, if this program keeps acting this good
it's a keeper! Anyway it is a good idea to have these things here in
case somebody else runs across this issue so they know what to do.

Oh, by the way I think that I also realized what was causing the
difference in cursor speed from the master PC mouse against the mouse
in the slave PC and it's something that should be here as a reference
also.

The master PC mouse is a newer Logitech mouse that has 800 Dpi optical
resolution and in the new PC even if it's newer I am using a much
older Microsoft mouse (The aforementioned Intellimouse Optical cause
it is still working just fine) which only has about half that
resolution (400 Dpi) and I'm pretty sure that that is what's causing
the difference so I'm afraid that the only choice to resolve that one
would be to use two mice of the same optical resolution in both
computers to prevent that speed change when one wants to use both PCs
separately without having to go to the control panel and change the
setting.

To help a wee bit with that in the mean time, one can put a shortcut
in the desktop, application launcher or in any other convenient place
to the mouse settings icon to at least get faster to them but anyway
this is no big a deal and its fixable and today an 800 Dpi optical
mouse its very easy and cheap to find.

So I recommend to people to use mice of same optical resolution in all
PCs so they don't get that problem, and better yet it's probably a
good idea to use equal mice models in all of them also but again this
is a minor issue and it depends on how much separate use they give to
their multiple PC setup and it's at their discretion.

So anyway, great software! :)

There's a setting in ID Master Preferences: Use this system's mouse
preferences when directing slaves (and same for keyboard). In theory
that should fix any such differences, but I found that for me it makes
it worse (the slave feels slow), so I keep it unchecked.

I agree with Tim. I leave the setting "Use this systems's mouse
preferences when directing slaves" unchecked. When I check it, the
mouse movements on my 2 slaves are not as responsive.
