Greetings,

I recently upgraded my master system from Windows XP x64 Edition to
Windows 7. My slaves are still running Windows XP 32-bit. I have
managed to get everything working like before, minus one feature: the
shared clipboard.

For some reason, I cannot copy and paste anything from one machine to
the next, like I used to be able to do. Copying from one XP slave to
another proves fruitless (nothing happens), copying from the master
system to either slave does nothing (no popups, no warning messages,
nothing), and attempting to copy from a slave to the master system
brings up this following error:

"None of the files copied onto the clipboard are accessible via
network shared directories."

I never had this issue before when running XP x64 Edition as my master
system's OS and having played around with some of the W7 settings has
proven useless so far.

Does anyone have a solution for me? I'd be very thankful.

I'd say you need to create some shared directories - Files that you
want to be copy/pasted must accessible via network shared directories.
Some folks will create read-only shares on the root directory of the
C:, D: etc, so that all files are available.

That could work, but it's certainly more cumbersome and time consuming
than it was before.

Is there a setting somewhere with 7 that I could just turn the need to
do that off?

Hi,

That's the way its always needed to work.

If your computers are on a trusted network (ie. a small home LAN with
a firewall protecting them from the outside world) then the easiest
thing to do is share the C:\ (i.e. the root directory of the C:) -
this will make all files on the C: accessible. You only need to do
this once per drive letter you want to share.

I see, so by default those drives were shared on XP.

Well, sharing the drives still does nothing lol. I've tried just
about everything and read everything I can find with google, still can
only copy/paste text back and forth, no documents, no pictures, no
video or audio, nothing but text/snippets.

Hi Dario,

I have am experimental version (v1.2.2.1) that fixes many bugs. I
suggest giving that a try and see if that helps.

Here's the link: http://www.inputdirector.com/downloads/InputDirector.v1.2.2.1.89.zip

Well, it seems to have made a very slight difference, but sadly still
doesn't work.

Attempting to copy from slave to master is still the same, while
attempting to copy from master to slave, has the slave "loading" for a
period of a few seconds, allowing me to click paste (when right
clicked), which leads to another period of loading for a few seconds,
before telling me it cannot paste.

I'll keep messing with it and eagerly await the next update/build. Is
there anywhere I can go to see these experimental builds?

Hi,

Can you access the file (that's on the slave) using Windows Explorer
running on the master? You need to be able to get from the master
computer via a network share setup on the slave.

Well, the problem I have with that is that I never had to do any of
that before. In the past, I literally had three computers (one XP 64-
bit, the master, two XP 32-bit, the slaves) with input director, able
to copy/paste almost any kind of file back and forth without having to
open up any shared or network directories/folders in the past. All
three are connected to the same router and running the same version of
input director, and that was the only two requirements for me to be
able to copy/paste back and forth in the past.

At the risk of sounding paranoid, I have no intention of opening up
any shared directories or creating specific folders/doing any special
treatment in order to "access" files from computer to computer, the
only thing I am looking for is to be able to copy and paste back and
forth between the three computers to one another. Unfortunately, the
only reason I upgraded to 7 on the master is because I have 8 GB of
RAM, and I wanted to make full use of my RAM. Windows XP x64 Edition,
sadly, was never a very good operating system and is very broken,
prompting the upgrade to 7.

Having never had to do anything special before with the master or the
slaves apart from installing input director, I have no intention or
desire of doing so now either.

I hope this makes sense, and I'm not trying to be difficult. I love
this program and what you guys do, it allows me to be extremely
flexible and multitask in a way that other people I know simply
cannot, but I am also a brutally paranoid person when it comes to
security, and opening up shared drives/directories greatly degrades
security.

I do apologize if my last post indicated I no longer wanted
assistance, that certainly was not the case...

I've appreciated your help thus far and will continue to do so right
to the finish.

It appears as though I cannot, but again, I didn't have to do that in
the past when I had all three machines using XP, the copy and paste
worked without a network share setup.

Hi,

Input Director does use network shares. When you select a file to copy
it determines if its available under a network share, if so, it will
then let it be pasted to another machine. The paste is literally Input
Director telling Windows - here is the UNC (network) path to the file
to open. Windows does all the heavy lifting (and security checks).

You must have originally had network shares in place on your old
system (in fact, in some instances Windows will create a network share
on each of the locally attached drives, these are the C$, D$, etc
shares).

Try creating a network share on your C: drive (if you're confident
with your network security - you can create it on the C:\ root
directory and that will share the complete drive). Confirm that that
you can access the file(s) you want to via Windows Explorer from the
other computer and then test that using Input Director copy/paste.
