Generated Id's with TProvider and TClientDataSet

Using the TProvider and TClientDataSet classes,
can anyone tell me where is the best place to
generate an id value for a primary key field?

I have a TStoredProc that calls a procedure which
generates the id value for me. The only place I
seem to be able to use this and have the
resulting record visible is in the BeforePost
event of the TClientDataSet.

I've tried using OnUpdateData event of the
TProvider class, and the id is still generated.
However, the resultant record is not visible to
my app.

What am I missing? Any and all help would be
greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!
