While turkeys are abundant in this region of North Carolina, the local beaver population kept the working folks busy. Beavers are ever-persistent building their dams, constructing many of these primitive water control structures to pool a suitable area for a lodge in which they call home. Left unmanaged, they'll clog the sprawling network of streams and creeks that meander into the Cape Fear River Basin, flooding surrounding agricultural lands and roads.
Regardless, bearded hens still lay eggs and raise broods like any other hen. Harvesting one is a personal call based on the strength of a resident turkey population and your appreciation for novelty. Many hunters are adamant against doing so, especially where turkey numbers are declining.
Like many of you, I grew up having Honeybaked ham for the holidays. It is such an easy meal and one that is a real crowd pleaser, so it was disturbing to learn that even though the ham and the turkey are gluten free the glaze used on each contained gluten making it unsafe for those on the gluten-free diet.
Note: Although the corporate office of HoneyBaked assured us that ALL glazes are now Gluten-Free, one of our readers found a ham that did not have the reformulated glaze. We contacted their office regarding this issue, but advise our readers to read all of the ingredients in the glaze you are given with your ham or make your own glaze.
I bought a honeybaked ham and got gluten exposed. Afterwards I called the store only to be told that although the Ham is gluten free, the GLAZE contains gluten. Very misleading! I was sick all Christmas night. Apparently all stores are not on the same page or some still have hams with gluten glaze. VERY DISAPPOINTED AND UPSET!
It's bad enough that it has sodium nitrite and phosphate for preservatives. They can cause cancer in some people depending on how much you eat. Anything deli type meats are pure toxic and full of salt as well. I'm a sugarholic (no HFCS) so we all have our vices. I just try to avoid some of them so my body can withstand the ones I have a weakness for.
