For right now, in the here and now. We have seen a decent success rate getting this updated using Windows. Obviously, like most of you, I am a full-time Linux users. So I have no desire to install Windows to update my BIOS.

Did the EFI method break laptops? cause it worked fine for me and some others it seemed. I dont like sharing the efi files while the official beta got removed, cause who can trust little ol me? if the windows stick method truly is such a problem, why consider a beta bios at all. just wait.

@Matt_Hartley Can you please share some details. What is the exact problem of the EFI updater? Is it the missing ME update? If people used the EFI updater (and updated the ME), will they need to wait for another update to fix something? If yes, what?

This is pretty much the same behavior and solution I observed when updating my personal 1260p (FRANGACP06) from 3.03 to 3.06 last year (WD SN850 back then, more RAM, all USB-C expansion cards). Even was the same ReTimer that failed to update. Although, while I am not 100%, I believe I had a different charger plugged in and on the left side back then.
So it seems very much that the ReTimers updating is what is problematic and nothing has changed with that since the 3.06 update. Only that my own FW already had up-to-date ReTimers, so that was not an issue this time around.

However, those who do not wish to wait can install Windows and run the MSI which has a solid success rate in testing here in with the community and with us. Ideal, no. But it does mean there BIOS are available now, but for efi we need to get some things sorted as there are some configurations that are not playing ball.

For those of you using Linux that are not thrilled with this. Yes, I get it. Fulltime Linux user here. However the ventoy method of creating a Windows installer USB is sound and works.
Install Windows, run the MSI updater, complete the process. Then once you have confirmed the BIOS update, wipe Windows.

Im pretty confident the general recommendation is not to install this update at all since this is just a beta. There are still no updates for the 12th gen laptops as far as the average user is concerned.

might not even browse these community pages, nor be on discord and be unaware of any bios updates. the average computer user is annoyed when a system reboots multiple times and all scary white characters appear and multiple progressbars.

I am thinking about adding a SSD to my Desktop Pavilion P6-2378 and wanted to check the UEFI-BIOS and I can not seem to be able to access it. I have read a little on this board and followed several instructions that was given. I tried with constantly pressing F10 from restart and from a complete shut down. I can't seem to find any info about this in my computer help either. Thank you.

On my HP 8200 Elite CMT Business PC with a UEFI BIOS, I need to tap the ESC key at the beginning of the HP welcome screen to get a menu of options. I cannot just hit F10 or F9 (boot options) like the good old days.

I've tried that and it did not work for me. I have a new graphics card in and it doesn't seem to fire up the monitor right away. I've been messing with this for too long today and I have to walk away for a while:smileysad: Thank you, Paul...I've been reading that many have problems with this and there are so many different solutions...it's kinda' crazy.

i tried this,my computer power switch turns amber and beeps continuously, held power button to turn off, then turned back on and it beeps again,i had to pull the power cord after switching off, then when i turned it on it booted to windows,i have a p6-2307a with updated graphics card and power supply to match card,

I have had the same problem with adding an upgraded Video Card to my p6 2378 with Windows 8. The solution for me was I had to remove the upgraded card, the go through the previous recommended steps to enter the bios. When you get to the bois you have to disable 'Secure Boot' and enable 'Legacy Boot'. Then turn off and reinstall the video card. It has worked perfectly after that.

im trying to install a new graphics card on my new hp envy 700. i was told i need to get in the bios and change the settings. so i followed these steps and the thing is. when i get to the last restart sceen and click restart i get a black screen and i get nothing. so therefor i cant get into the settings i need to get in to. any solutions?

First I was installing VS on my laptop PC. I wasn't watching the installation, but when I came back it was on an error page saying no boot device found. I restarted it and it started up but after I closed the lid, it didn't automatically turn on and I had to reset it and had the same problem with it not finding the hard drive. I looked at the hard drive and thought I had a loose SATA cable, so I fixed that and bios was able to find the hard drive again and it booted up. Because the laptop is older, I thought maybe the hard drive or the controller was going bad (even though the hard drive is newer because I replaced the original with an SSD). I still kept having problems with the laptop crashing because the hard drive could not be found.

Thinking my laptop is on it last legs, today I was installing VS on my desktop PC. Again I was not watching the installation because they are pretty lengthy. When I went back to it it was on the bios setup screen. My boot drive (which is a 256 GB SSD) said it had 0MB in the bios. I tried rebooting, but it still could not read the boot drive. When it went back to the bios the drive was gone. I unplugged the SATA and power cables from the drive, plugged them back in and rebooted. Again it booted to the bios, but this time my hard drive was there and it showed that it had 256GB, but it still would not boot up windows.

Clearly this problem is related to installation of VS community. As of right now I am deleting VS community off my laptop. My desktop will still not boot up; I am going to try to fix Windows with a USB key.

Dear customer, thank you for your feedback and I am sorry to hear that you are running into this issue. This issue has been escalated for further investigation, if there is any process, I will inform you immediately.

I was trying to install Visual Studio 2022 Community Edition and my Hard Disk also crashed. I tried rebooting several times before it came back online again by a stroke of luck. The issue clearly lies with the installation of Visual Studio.

Same problem with me. I have HP Laptop Windows 10 Home Edition. After installing VS 2022 Community Edition it damaged my Hard disk with a massive bad sector, causing me to replace my hard disk to recover my laptop.

Hi Forum,

It took my attention that three of the Dell Clients in the company experienced the same behaviour after a BIOS Update came through the Windows Update Tool. Before the BIOS was updated a couple of Intel updates were installed therefore I express my concern here.
The shown behaviour is that after the installation, the equipments most be reboot and by booting up they remain on "loading" at the initial Dell Logo, after that windows can't be booted anymore but only on safe mode. After a Systemrepair performed in the safe mode I was able to boot up windows again (not always) but after a reboot of the system the problem was there again.

The updated laptops are all different models: Latitude 5431, Latitude 5420 and a Inspiron 7706 2n1. From those Notebooks only the Latitutde 5431 was connected to the dockingstation.

It's also important to remark, that the updates were received between the first and the second week of februeary and that by other equipments the update was installed without problem.

Do you have any hint about a known problem or a way to isolate better the issue?

But the bios is created by dell and owned by dell, not Intel. Yes, dell bios updates can be delivered by Windows update, which is a problem that dell and microsoft have to resolve. Personally, I would never allow a bios update from windows update. And, if the bios is critical, all the more important that you manage it. As I said, a dell bios delivered by Windows Update should have been optional. Was it not? If it was not, then you need to be complaining loudly to dell and microsoft. If it was optional, then your install procedure needs attention. And, do not try to derive anything from a NUC bios update.

Problem is that it is domain joined to a bunch of non-existant domains and no one knows any of the credentials to get in. I initally thought oh thats fine ill just put the XP installer disc into the disc drive and change the boot order and do it that way, Problem is that the bios has an admin password nobody knows.

Yes, it is old enough to use the remove CMOS battery process. Another one I have have used that sometimes works is to confuse it on startup. As you power on, repeatedly drag your hand across the keyboard and repeatedly hit enter as your complete your drag. If starts to go into Windows switch it off and retry. It can take awhile but you may avoid taking it to bits.

Hello @Liam13White,I regret that your BIOS password is locked. As many of the solutions offered here have not been effective in removing a BIOS password for commercial laptops, I would advise, as The Repairatrooper does, that you contact HP Support.

I think it was my CPU OC. I was overclocked to 3.8ghz. But I was in good temps, and only 1.375 volts. Not too bad. Anways, im not completely sure but it crashed and went to the windows recovery ( or aka blue screen), while blasting a loud noise. I said screw that, and just restarted my PC.
