Do you want to help develop the Nuclear Weapons Convention (NWC) strategy and take a lead in its promotion?

Join the Abolition 2000 NWC Working Group!

 

Dear A2000 members,

 

In November 1995, Abolition 2000 established the Nuclear Weapons Convention (NWC) Working Group (chaired by Jurgen Scheffran and Alyn Ware) which was involved in the Model NWC drafting and in promoting the United Nations resolution calling on implementation of the International Court of Justice Advisory Opinion on Nuclear Weapons through negotiations leading to the conclusion of an NWC.

 

Since then the working group (at one time also co-chaired by Merav Datan) has continued to promote both the Model NWC (released in 1997 and revised in 2007), the United Nations resolution (adopted annually since 1996) and other efforts to advance a NWC. The main function of the working group has been to facilitate cooperation and communication between organizations and individuals advancing and promoting a NWC.

 

The Abolition 2000 Coordinating Committee announces a re-invigoration of the A2000 NWC Working Group, a revision of its mandate and an invitation to A2000 members to join the group.

 

The revised mandate is:

The Nuclear Weapons Convention (NWC) working group provides an information base on the proposal for a NWC through;

a)      the Abolition 2000 website,

b)      regular summary updates via the A2000 list-server, including progress on government and high-level support for a NWC, activities of member organizations and other organizations to promote a NWC and recent articles on a NWC, and

c)      discussion of strategy for advancing a NWC at the United Nations and through a like-minded preparatory process.

 

As much as possible the working group avoids replicating the work that member organizations and other organizations are doing on a NWC, but rather serves as an information link between them. Members of the working group communicate primarily via email but also on occasions by conference call and in physical meetings during key international disarmament events and at the A2000 Annual General Meeting.
