-The current status of the ability to Innovate based on current areas
Laws, Norms, Markets, and Architecture. While these areas might appear
to some that they are separate it should be noted they that areas work
together as a complex adaptive system where a change to one can result
to a change in another.
1.) Laws- How current laws affect how certain innovative ideas are
produced and distrubted
Ex: How Digital Rights Managment (DRM) protection is
affecting the current development of digital technologies such as P2P
networks, Media Players, wesite development, etc.
2.) Norms- How people percieve certain products, technologies, ideas,
and strategies as being acceptable (either good or bad) depending on
their visions (constrained or unconstrained) of how the world works.
Ex: Stem Cell Research. This area is very controversial
topic. But many people incorrectly assume that all stem cell research
is bad because it is tied in
with another topic of abortion. But in reality the are different types
of stem cell research the two primary areas: Embryonic and Adult.
Embryonic stem cell research focuses on low developed stem cells and
how they might be used to produce biotechnologies that cure many types
of diseases. This is the area that is controversial because it is
rightly tied in with abortion. But Adult stem cell research revolves
around adult stem cell which are cells at later stages in development
that aren't attached to embryos in any way. But lack of information
combined with certain belief systems can lead a person to make an
incorrect inference about the ethics of adult stem cell research and
percieve it as bad. The genereal norms happen to actual prevail in
current society leading people to not support any type of stem cell
research.
3.) Market- How certain products are produced, distributed, and
advertised based on peoples wants or needs.
Ex: Books. People often go to a publisher who already has
the resources needed to make the book, transport the book to retailers
or individuals, and promote the book. This has an affect on what books
get published by the publishers needs and beliefs.
4.) Architecture- the resources that a person has to work with to be
able to innovate including geography, technology, architectural designs
and structures (a bridge to cross a creek).
Ex: The architecture of myspace only permits users to change
their preferences to the extent allowed. This also limits the language
a person can program their profiles in. Another thing affected is the
capabilities of social networking.
